Both Boston and Detroit made some big off-season shake-ups this summer, however one team’s appear to be working out much more favorably than the others.
Gone from the Boston roster is Milan Lucic and Loui Eriksson, and in is David Backes.
It appears that Boston is currently missing the supplemental scoring that both Lucic and Eriksson provided, as the team currently ranks 23rd in goals-per-game and aside from their top-two scorers, no other player has recorded more than four points.
On the other hand, Detroit’s moves have paid dividends early on with Thomas Vanek looking like the old Thomas Vanek.
Frans Nielsen has performed as expected, provided a solid two-way game up the middle as a depth veteran centerman for the Wings.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins handed out a significant six-year contract to winger Brad Marchand this summer, after he tallied 37 goals and 61 points a year ago.
Marchand has continued his torrid scoring for a season ago to pace the Bruins, with 10 points in 7 games thus far.
David Pastrnak is healthy and is looking like he’s taken another step in his development.
The 20-year old, former 2014 first round selection, has produced five goals and eight points though seven games this season, showing great chemistry on the top-line alongside Marchand and Patrice Bergeron.
David Backes has been good, having tallied four points but just in five games played.
He fits the mold of what the Bruins strive to be, a gritty, deep, two-way team that can grind out wins. The former Blues’ captain is known for his tough playing style and gritty two-way game while also being able to provide in the 60-point range.

It still puzzles me why the Bruins dealt Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames.
I understand that they had cap issues and needed to sign Torey Krug amongst others, but a 6’5 solid two-way defenseman with enormous upside and proven he can be a top-pairing defenseman in the NHL don’t come around every day, and the blueline hasn’t looked the same since he left.
A wise move would’ve been dealing from their position of strength- in goal- and holding on to Hamilton to be the aging Zdeno Chara’s heir apparent.
Detroit Red Wings
Thomas Vanek appears to found his own personal fountain of youth in Detroit, as the 32-year old has recorded four goals and either points through seven games with the Wings so far this season.
Vanek, once a top scorer in the league for many years, struggled mightly in Minnesota the past two season, registering just 52 and 41 points, respectively.
Detroit may not have any superstar player at the moment, but the lineup is deep amongst the forward corps. Gustav Nyquist leads the way with eight points in as many games, and Darren Helm has experienced an offensive surge with seven thus far.
Henrik Zetterberg is not the top scorer he once was, but is a great leader and two-way forward to help lead by example for young stars in the making in Dylan Larkin, Nyquist, Andreas Athanasiou, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar.

Petr Mrazek carries the bulk of the load in net for the Wings, however Jimmy Howard has been nearly perfect thus far this year and is making his case for an even split in starts.
Mrazek has a 2.48 GAA and .925 SV% in four starts, whereas Howard owns a 0.50 GAA and .984 SV% in his two starts. It’s a “problem” that Detroit and coach Jeff Blashill welcomes with open arms.
Mike Green leads all Detroit defenders with seven points in eight games thus far, and is the right-hand powerplay quarterback that every team covets.
While aging and seemingly has lost a step, Niklas Kronwall is still a feared, gritty veteran defender.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- With Tukka Rask sidelined, no Bruins’ netminder has a SV% better than .854 this year.
- Boston has lost three straight games and allowed 14 goals total compared to just their 4 scored in those games.
Free Boston Bruins vs Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction
While I expect the Bruins to be better than they’ve shown so far, the losses of Milan Lucic and Loui Eriksson are quite apparent.
The scoring just hasn’t been there aside from Pasternak and Marchand this season, and while Bergeron and David Krejci will be fine, there isn’t a ton of depth anymore.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Detroit -1.5
Why go against what’s trending right now? Considering Tukka Rask is out and is a huge key to this team, I expect Detroit to be able to tack on the the goals against a shaky defensive unit in front of whoever tries to fill in for him.
Detroit has been rolling early and are receiving lights out goaltending from both of their goalies, so they should be able to stop a Boston offense that ranks 23rd in the league.
