Boston showed Brad Marchand the money, locking him up to a long-term deal and it’s paid dividend, as he leads the team in scoring. Boston has played well this season, with 22 points in 19 games played and currently sitting in 4th in the Atlantic.
The Calgary Flames are close to the middle of their Division as well, but have not played well and have suffered some key loses, namely star scorer Johnny Gaudreau.
Calgary has 17 points in their 21 games played and sit In fourth of seven in the weak Pacific Division.
Calgary Flames
Calgary has done a great job of building a solid young roster around the likes of key building blocks in Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau, who have quickly blossomed into a great duo.
Both were selected by the Flames and developed within the franchise, and the franchise has acquired other young pieces to complete a solid core.
Gaudreau led the team in scoring last year in his sophomore season with 78 points in 79 games played. Losing Gaudreau for the foreseeable future hurts their offense immensely, as he sustained a finger injury and was placed on the IR.

The Flames currently sit in 25th overall in goals per game at an average of just 2.3, and losing their best offensive player could certainly see that mark dive even further.
Sean Monahan has just eight points after tallying 63 a season ago, and will need to step up his production in Johnny Hockey’s absence.
Veteran Michael Frolik currently leads the team with six goals and 14 points.
Calgary acquired Dougie Hamilton from Boston a year and a half ago in a deal for three high picks. It seems to be paying dividends, as Hamilton is an excellent young, 6-foot-5 right shot defenseman who can play in all-situations.
He’s joined by captain Mark Giordano, TD Brodie and Dennis Wideman to round-out the solid Flames’ top-4.
Brian Elliot was acquired this summer to solidify the goaltending situation in Calgary, but it’s not been a pretty start to his Flames’ career .
Elliot owns a .882 SV% and 3.42 GAA on the year, and has allowed at least four goals in seven of his 12 starts this season.
Boston Bruins
As mentioned, Boston invested significantly in a six-year contract to winger Brad Marchand this summer, after he tallied 37 goals and 61 points a year ago.
It appears to have been the right move, at least as of now, as Marchand is currently leading the team with 17 points.
David Pastrnak appears to have taken another step in his development, leading the Bruins with 10 goals already.
The 20-year old, former first round selection, clearly is loving life riding shotgun on the top line alongside Marchand and the incumbent and underrated pivot, Patrice Bergeron.
Don’t forget about David Krejci, who continues to quietly put up points year-after-year and has 12 in 19 games this season.
David Backes has performed as expected with eight points in 14 games on Krejci’s wing and adding to the prototypical Bruins’ toughness, as evidenced by his 21 PIMS.

It still puzzles me why the Bruins dealt Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames, and they’ll be reminded firsthand how good of an asset he is in this game.
Tuukka Rask doesn’t have the luxury of Hamilton playing in front of him anymore, but his numbers are as good as ever. Rask has a .942 SV% and a 1.57 GAA with a 11-3 record in his 14 games.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Tuukka Rask sits in 2nd overall in GAA with 1.57, and 4th in SV% with .942.
- Brian Elliot has the second worst SV% in the league at .882, only besting Michal Neuvirth of the Flyers.
Free Calgary Flames vs Boston Bruins NHL Hockey Prediction
Without Gaudreau, it’s hard to trust the Flames’ offense to produce at a higher clip than their currently 25th ranked scoring pace.
Matthew Tkachuk has been a pleasant surprise for the team, tallying nine points thus far in his rookie year.
However, Calgary will need Monahan, Sam Bennett, Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg to pick up their paces, despite adjusting to a new system under new coach, Glen Gulutzan.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Boston -1.5
Elliot has been completely terrible, as mentioned, whereas Tuukka Rask has produced an MVP worthy season early on.
Boston’s offense has been much better than Calgary’s this season as well, so the edge for Boston is apparent in a number of different areas and they have the luxury of home ice advantage – I’ll take the spread.
