In this one we see the Ducks head out to east to the big apple to take on the Rangers in MSG. The Garden has been a tough place to opposing teams this season.
The Rangers have just 5 regulation losses at home all season which is mind boggling. And on the flip side the Ducks are abysmal on the road.
After an incredibly hot start that always seemed a little fraudulent the Ducks have come back down to earth and are right where we thought they would be. Recently they dealt a blue chip defenceman, Josh Manson to the Colorado Avalanche (which I found somewhat puzzling) which indicates they know they are going to miss at this point and are sellers at the deadline.
So with all that in mind let’s examine the team metrics and see what we like.
Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks have some really promising young players that are going to be stars for years to come as I have covered here before. But they also have a bunch of veteran players on expiring deals.
So it’s not that this team lacks direction, they will be set up nice for a rebuild done the right way but they need to iron out some kinks. Hampus Lindholm is a UFA this season and I expect him to be out the door at the deadline.
I also wonder if a team will inquire about captain Ryan Getzlaf. I find it a little unlikely the Ducks will part with him as he is a consummate pro that has instilled a culture there but maybe he wants to go on another cup run.
Finally, John Gibson (who is starting in this one) has taken a hit in his GAA but still is posting a very good save percentage at .906. There are a number of goaltending needy teams entering the playoffs (cough, cough Edmonton) that will likely be calling about him and his availability.
New York Rangers
I have really liked the Rangers this season in a number of areas. I have highlighted their need for secondary scoring before so let’s discuss other facets of their game for a moment.
Although they allow quite a few shots on average this team is tied for 3rd in the league with goals allowed per game. Obviously this has a lot to do with Shesterkin no question but this defensive unit is underrated.
That being said, I have watched a number of their games this past month and my one knock on this team especially heading into playoffs is how soft they are. Outside of Trouba and Reaves, the latter of which has been in and out of games as of late, this team does not make life difficult for opponents and rely mostly on skill.
Hate to be that “old school” guy, but time and time again we have seen that be a recipe for success in the regular season and yet results in failure in the playoffs. If you do not elevate your game to a certain level come Stanley Cup time you don’t stand a chance and I question if guys like Panarin, Fox and Zibanejad are able to play that kinda hockey.
