Super Bowl LI Handicapping
This season has been all about looking for flaws in the Patriots. Since Week 1 the team has proven itself to be the team to beat, getting their season started off with an exclamation point with an unlikely win over the Arizona Cardinals on the national stage, and beginning the year with a 3-1 record while they were expected to – best case scenario – tread water while they waited for the return of the suspended Tom Brady.
To no one’s surprise, Brady’s return helped the Patriots find another gear, as they’ve gone 13-1 with their star quarterback under center this season.
Brady and the Patriots are playing with a sense of determination – in their wanting to embarrass commissioner Roger Goodell for his decision to suspend Brady – and it’s resulted in the team playing at a level that no other team in the NFL has been able to match.
No those buzzsaw Patriots will take on an Atlanta Falcons team that’s on an impressive run of their own, having bounced back from a frustrating opening week loss to the rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win the NFC South, and now the NFC.
The Falcons’ current core has a history of failing to come up big when it matters most, but this year’s group has bucked that trend, thanks in large part to the team finally buying in to what offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s been selling.
While it’s Matt Ryan who receives all the accolades and MVP consideration, Shanahan has put on a master class as the team’s play-caller, leaving Ryan in a position for success on just about every play.
A quick look at Ryan’s stats on the season are enough to have any football fan jump out of their chair, but anyone who’s paid close enough attention to the Falcons this season knows a lot of those numbers have been built on the back of wide-open receivers and short passes turning into big gains.
That’s not to take too much away from Ryan, but he appears to be a rude awakening in store for him and Falcons fans in the near future.

The Falcons have been winning with X’s and O’s all season long, and they’re about to run into the master of X’s and O’s in Bill Belichick.
Expect the Patriots’ defense to give the Falcons the first real resistance they’ve experienced in a while, while shortening the game with their newfound running game.
