Who would have thought that at Week 14, a match-up between the Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks would have playoff implications? Well, neither did I but here we are. The NFC South is so tight right now that the Panthers still have a shot at making the playoffs. On the other side, the NFC West is down to the 49ers and the Seahawks who are looking to take over as the top dogs in the division.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are 4-8 and fresh off putting the man thought to be the answer to their problems under center in Baker Mayfield on waivers. Some may argue that the Mayfield experiment didn’t go well and to that I would quote AEW’s The Acclaimed and say “That’s Right”.
With just a single win to his name this year, the pivot ranks last in in the league with a Total QBR of 18.2 among qualified quarterbacks. The next closest this season would be the Texans’ Davis Mills with a 29.2 rating. Going back to when the stat started being tracked nearly two decades ago, Mayfield’s 18.2 rating ranks 520th out of 521 qualified QBs.
Following a solid outing against the Broncos prior to their bye week, we’ll see Sam Darnold lead Carolina on the to field in Seattle for his second game of the season. Against Denver, Darnold threw for a clean 164 yards, averaging 8.6 yards per play while putting up 2 touchdowns on the board via a pass and a run. The Panthers held the Broncos to just a single touchdown and took the contest 23-10 and somehow are still in the playoff picture.
That being said, the Panthers rank 3rd last in yards per game and aren’t surprisingly not the most electrifying team to watch. They’re averaging less than 20.0 points per game and are in and around the league average in terms of points allowed this season.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are still battling for the top spot in the NFC West with a 7-5 record on the season. They didn’t do the expected damage to the injury plagued Rams as most expected, especially considering those players were Cooper Kupp, Aaron Donald and Matthew Stafford. Instead, they barely snuck out of LA with a 27-23 victory thanks to a last minute DK Metcalf touchdown that put them over the hump.
They’ve struggled over their last 3 games, allowing an average of 28.0 points against over that stretch with a 1-2 tally. On the season, they rank in the bottom three in terms of overall yards allowed and are allowing the second most rushing yards per game this year.
On offence, they’re putting up the fifth most points per game with 26.5 on the board and Geno Smith has been everything for the Seahawks. Smith is in the top five in terms of passing yards with 3,169 and touchdowns with 22 on the year. Add to the fact that they may be missing Kenneth Walker III with an ankle sprain and Geno will be relied upon that much more this week. The question is, can he shoulder the load? Well, that’s why we watch.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Under is 6-2 in Panthers last 8 vs. NFC.
- Under is 8-3 in Panthers last 11 games overall.
- Panthers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Seattle.
4* Free Week 14 NFL Betting Prediction: UNDER 43.5
The Panthers are an ugly 0-5 on the road this season and Seattle has lost their last two at home. I don’t really trust either team to get the job done which is why the under is calling my name for this one. The book is out on both these teams this week. The Seahawks are going to be a pass heavy team as long as Walker III is out and the Panthers aren’t going to score much overall.
