Shanahan does appear to be in it for the long haul, however, as both he and new general manager signed matching six-year contracts, as the team’s brass appears content to let these two men guide their rebuild.
The duo didn’t waste any time overhauling the roster, as the franchise looks past the 2016 season.
2017 San Francisco 49ers Predictions: Roster Changes
Lynch was a surprise hire by the 49ers as the franchise kept their interest in the former broadcaster very quiet. And if his first few months on the job are any indication, the 49ers made a good decision to bring him aboard.
He started out by taking the Bears to school, allowing them to trade up one spot in the draft to pick a quarterback he didn’t even want in exchange for three draft picks.
There, he took the player he wanted all along – Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas.
Lynch then seized the opportunity to draft another highly talented player, and one he’d coveted throughout the draft process in Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, by trading back into the first round and grabbing the 31st overall selection from the New Orleans Saints.
The team didn’t make any major splashes in free agency, but instead made some smart, under the radar moves like signing Brian Hoyer to offer a bridge at quarterback, reuniting Pierre Garcon with Shanahan.
Under Shanahan the wide receiver had the best season of his career, and giving the coach the fullback he covets by prying Kyle Juszczyk away from the Ravens.
The team brought in a slew of other new faces, including wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, running back Tim Hightower, and linebacker Malcolm Smith.
They also drafted quarterback C.J. Beathard – a favorite prospect of Kyle Shanahan. A lot of veterans walked, including safety Antoine Bethea, cornerback Tramaine Brock, and wide receiver Torrey Smith.
Linebacker Gerald Hodges signed a big money deal with the Buffalo Bills.
2017 San Francisco 49ers Predictions: Offense
Shanahan’s running game has translated well at every stop he’s been at, but it could pose an interesting problem for the 49ers.
Running back Carlos Hyde has historically excelled running out of the shotgun, and enjoyed the best season of his career under Chip Kelly.
There have been rumblings he’s been a bad fit in Shanahan’s offense and could be on the trading block.
At the quarterback position, Hoyer and Matt Barkley will compete for the starting gig, with Hoyer the clear favorite.
Hoyer will be a short term fill-in with Beathard likely to see some time at some point this season, and the team likely to dive into the quarterback pool at next year’s draft.
2017 San Francisco 49ers Predictions: Defense
There’s not a lot of talent here, but NaVorro Bowman is one of the best in the game at the linebacker position. He’ll be a leader on the field for a young group with only a handful of playmakers. The team will likely ask a lot of rookies Thomas and Foster from day one.
2017 San Francisco 49ers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The running game always takes a step forward when Kyle Shanahan comes to town. It may not be Hyde leading the show. Fourth round running back Joe Williams is worth keeping an eye on, and Hightower certainly has something left in the tank.
The defense is going to be bad. There’s just not a lot of talent there, and if Bowman goes down again, things can get ugly in a hurry.
2017 San Francisco 49ers Prediction (Final Record): 4-12
It’s good to see the 49ers finally pointed in the right direction, but they’re not close to competing right now.
There’s probably an extra couple wins in the cards for them after all their changes, but there’s still a lot of work to be done in rebuilding this roster. Stay away from the 49ers when putting money down on the futures board this season.
