Given the age of some of the core players on this team, Arizona’s win-now window is closing fast, with quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald inching closer to retirement, making last year’s throwaway season all the more painful.
On the bright side, the Cardinals are getting the band back together and are one of the most likely bounce back candidates.
And given the current state of the NFC West, there’s really only one other team that the Cardinals need to worry about as they look to claw their way back into the playoff picture.
2017 Arizona Cardinals Predictions: Roster Changes
The Cardinals turned their attention to their defense in the offseason, adding some playmakers all over the field.
Safety Antoine Bethea comes over from the division rival 49ers, and linebacker Karlos Dansby returns to offer a veteran presence to this unit, which will be needed with both Calais Campbell and Daryl Washington gone.
They also went defense-heavy in the draft, adding linebacker Haason Reddick in the first round, and safety Budda Baker in the second. Baker will likely be asked to contribute immediately following the painful losses of D.J. Swearinger and Tony Jefferson at safety.
Bethea and Tyvon Branch will also be in contention for that open safety spot opposite Tyrann Mathieu.
2017 Arizona Cardinals Predictions: Offense
As bad as things looked in 2016, the Cardinals still ranked in the top 10 in the league in both yards and points.
Even so, Palmer’s numbers took a dive in 2016, as he threw for fewer yards and touchdowns than he did in his standout 2015 season.
The Cardinals clearly have faith in him, though, as they did not draft a quarterback, leaving the 37-year-old as the only legitimate option at the position.
Running back David Johnson was just about the only Cardinals player to overcome the down 2016 season for the Cardinals.
A fantasy football darling, Johnson was dominant both on the ground and as a pass-catcher, and Arians has him tabbed for 30 touches per game again this season.
2017 Arizona Cardinals Predictions: Defense
The loss of Campbell’s going to hurt, but the team hopes it already has a replacement in house in Rodney Gunter or Robert Nkemdiche. Reddick also has experience playing defensive end at Temple, but is expected to slot in at linebacker.
The play of this unit is going to depend largely on how Mathieu recovers from a season-ending shoulder injury.
2017 Arizona Cardinals Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
David Johnson was able to do some incredible things on a bad team that was struggling to find any sort of consistency through the air. After escaping a potentially devastating injury to close out last season, Johnson is poised for another strong season as a true workhorse back.
He’s a legitimate threat to gain 1,000 yards both on the ground and through the air as the clear focal point of this high-powered offense.
The Cardinals will go as far as Palmer will take them, and from an outside perspective, it’s tough to explain why this team’s shown as much unwavering faith in him.
As good as he’s been at times, he’s been injury prone, and is always one hit away from dashing any shot the Cardinals have at competing for a Super Bowl.
2017 Arizona Cardinals Prediction (Final Record): 10-6
The Cardinals are always going to be entertaining so long as Bruce Arians is the head coach and they have as many playmakers on defense as they currently do. How many wins that translates into will depend on Palmer returning to form and staying healthy.
The Cardinals are a good value play in the NFC West, and to win the NFC.
