But again, the team fell flat on its face, finishing dead last in the AFC South with a 3-13 record.
But there’s reason for optimism as the team again won the offseason, bringing in some talented veterans and draft prospects that could finally get this group over the hump.
2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Predictions: Roster Changes
With Tom Coughlin coming in to spearhead the Jaguars’ front office, major changes were to be expected, and to no one’s surprise, that’s exactly what went down.
The first casualty was head coach Gus Bradley, who’s been replaced by Doug Marrone.
The Jaguars then made some huge free agent splashes. The team brought in arguably the top available cornerback in A.J. Bouye, not only bringing in a reliable cover man, but also prying him away from the division rival Houston Texans.
They also signed the man that may have been the best available defensive lineman in long-time Arizona Cardinal Calais Campbell. And they weren’t done there, adding former Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church.
All told, that trio received a combined $68 million guaranteed.
But the biggest headlines came on draft night when the team used a high choice to add LSU running back Leonard Fournette. He’ll be the new Fred Taylor – the motor on Coughlin’s Jaguars teams of the 1990s.
The offensive line took some hits with Kelvin Beachum and Luke Joeckel leaving, though Cam Robinson was a good addition in the second round of the draft.
And moving out of the secondary in favor of those new additions are cornerback Prince Amukamara and safety Johnathan Cyprien. Tight end Julius Thomas was also traded to the Miami Dolphins, ending his disappointing tenure in Jacksonville.
2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Predictions: Offense
The offense will likely look a lot different this year. The pass-happy ways of the last couple seasons will likely give way to a gameplan that relies heavily on Fournette. The rookie figures to receive a pretty significant workload right out of the gate.
The passing game took a big step backwards last season, with breakouts Blake Bortles and Allen Robinson crashing back down to earth.
With Robinson, Allen Hurns, and Marqise Lee, the Jaguars have the weapons at wide receiver to bounce back through the air.
2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Predictions: Defense
The Jaguars are pouring big money and high draft picks into their defense, so it’s just a matter of time before this group comes together.
The additions of Bouye, Campbell, and Church should make an immediate difference, and if youngsters like Jalen Ramsey, Myle Jack, and Dante Fowler Jr. can take their games to the next level, this unit can be very good, very soon.
2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
There’s got to be a little hesitancy in buying into this defense right away given that we’ve heard this story time and time again, but there’s just so much talent that’s been injected into that group over the past two offseasons that it’s difficult to imagine they don’t come together sooner or later.
This will be a major make-or-break campaign for Bortles, whose 35-touchdown 2015 campaign seems like a distant memory. If the Jaguars are going to start winning now, he’s going to have to up his completion rate and cut out the interceptions that have been a thorn in his side.
2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Prediction (Final Record): 7-9
The Jaguars have been adding a lot of solid pieces in recent years, and could be a decent dark horse bet if Doug Marrone can get everyone on the same page in a hurry.
But with a difficult schedule on tap and the AFC South improving in the offseason, it’ll likely take some time for Coughlin to right this ship.
