New general manager Chris Ballard didn’t waste any time putting his mark on the Colts in his first offseason with the franchise. He wanted to make the Colts younger and more athletic, and that’s exactly what he did.
While it’s safe to say the franchise is now pointed in the right direction, how that translates on the field in the short term is still to be seen.
2017 Indianapolis Colts Predictions: Roster Changes
Veterans Mike Adams, D’Qwell Jackson, and Erik Walden are all gone in Ballard’s efforts to make the defense younger and more athletic.
Then Ballard spent the team’s first three draft choices on defensive players, bringing in safety Malik Hooker in the first round, cornerback Quincy Wilson in the second round, and linebacker Tarrell Basham in the third round.

And when it came to signing free agents, Ballard let the top end talents who received big money deals pass him by, instead signing pass-rushers Jabaal Sheard and John Simon to team-friendly three-year deals.
Another under the radar deal that should help immediately is the addition of Kamar Aiken, a wide receiver formerly with the Baltimore Ravens.
The team has leaned on speedy, skilled wide receivers in recent years, but Aiken offers Luck a physical, big-bodied target to throw to.
2017 Indianapolis Colts Predictions: Offense
The offense remains all about what Andrew Luck can do with the football in his hands. He’ll be the guy at the center of what this unit accomplishes.
With a healthy compliment of receivers he should be able to bounce back and have a strong season if he’s able to stay healthy.
T.Y. Hilton should be in for a big season, and with Dwayne Allen leaving town, tight end Jack Doyle is poised for a breakout campaign as one of Luck’s favorite targets.

The running game has been a little disappointing in recent seasons, with Frank Gore not offering the kind of power the team had been hoping for from him, understandable given his age and the wear on him after years in San Francisco.
Fourth round pick Marlon Mack will play behind him and could have the job all to himself the following season.
2017 Indianapolis Colts Predictions: Defense
This team’s never really been known for its defense, and this year will be no different.
The defense is going to look nothing like it did a year ago, but that’s all by design after the group finished 30th in total defense last season – its worst campaign since moving to Indianapolis from Baltimore in 1984.
2017 Indianapolis Colts Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
If everyone’s healthy, the passing game should be really strong once again – but Luck went under the knife in January for surgery on the labrum in his throwing shoulder.
All signs point to him being ready for the season opener on Sept. 10, but if he misses a lot of time in the offseason, it may take a while to get timing down with his receivers.

A lot of new faces is good and bad, as a roster refresh was certainly needed, but it’s going to be tough for the coaching staff to get all those guys on the same page in a short amount of time.
2017 Indianapolis Colts Prediction (Final Record): 8-8
There were so many moving parts on the Colts’ roster this offseason that it’s tough to put together a proper projection for how they’ll fare this season – particularly with all the uncertainly surrounding Luck’s health.
With the AFC South getting stronger this offseason, back the Colts when playing the futures board this year seems like a risky proposition.
