The South Dakota Jackrabbits have earned wins in their last 17 games and they have secured the top spot for the Summit League Tournament. The Jackrabbits will almost be home for the event as the conference tourney will be held in Sioux Falls, SD, at the Denny Sanford Premier Center and will start on March 5.
What a season it has been for the Jackrabbits who have only suffered 4 defeats all year while running off a perfect 17 – 0 record on their home court this year. We don’t really want to remind the Roos what these Jackrabbits did to them in the first meeting between these two squads but we must. How does that 89 – 57 final score look to you? Rather convincing and on the brink of obnoxious!
The Roos are trying to secure the 2-seed in the conference tournament but the odds are a bit against them because North Dakota State is playing North Dakota today too. In this final game of the regular season for all Summit League teams, the Roos would need to not only beat South Dakota State but would also need NDSU to lose to an extremely bad North Dakota squad. That’s simply not going to happen.
South Dakota State Jackrabbits
Well, the obvious goal for this team now is to cruise into the Summit League Tournament riding an 18-game winning streak. The Jackrabbits are certainly expected to be the program that reaches the NCAA Tournament and I think they still deserve to appear there whether they run through the conference tourney or not. We all know that Summit League at-large bids don’t come to teams in second place but at worst the NIT will still be happening even if that is a letdown.
The Jackrabbits have won 5 Summit League Conference titles with their last win coming in the 2018 version of the show. That North Dakota State team right behind them in the standings has taken 2 of the last 3 conference tourneys and it might just come down to an SDSU V NDSU final barring an upset along the way.
Even though Mike isn’t here anymore, and you know who I mean if you have followed this program over the last few years, three Jackrabbits are producing big numbers for this team led by Head Coach Eric Henderson. Henderson has accumulated a 64 – 21 record in three years with the Jackrabbits and they are chasing their first post-season appearance under his guidance. Of course, this team was poised to make an NCAA Tournament showing in the 2019-20 campaign that got cut short as the Jackrabbitswere tied for the regular-season title.
Mike Daum had left right before that season and the Jackrabbits have amazingly only gotten better since his departure. Let’s make no mistake that Mike was a baller and a half and that’s why he is the all-time leading scorer in Summit League history who was one of only 10 players to score 3,000 points in his collegiate career.
Anyway, Doug Wilson and Baylor Scheierman both are averaging 16 PPG and along with about 300 other programs this team has no bench to speak of. Oh, okay, right. We just saw Luke Appel go nuts finding 41 points off the bench in the win over ORU last time out, but he was basically it from the subs.
Kansas City Roos
North Dakota State, Kansas City, and Oral Roberts are all 12 – 5 behind the Jackrabbits so all of today’s games will decide placement for the Summit League Tournament. Regardless, the Roos are a top-4 program in the Summit and there has been a lot of good basketball being played around here this year.
The Roos have won 7 of their last 8 games and are playing their final home game of the year where they have gone 11 – 2 in 13 games at the Swinney Recreation Center. The Roos just returned to the Summit League in 2020 after being part of the conference from 1995 to 2013. This program jumped to the WAC for 8 years and just came back a season ago.
What the Jackrabbits have with scoring prowess from their big 3, the Roos have four players who all find their way to double-digits nightly. Evan Gilyard II is putting up just under 17 PPG but he has dudes all around him who can produce. Arkel Lamar, Josiah Allick, and Marvin Nesbitt Jr. are all double-digit scorers and ironically they all grab right about 6 boards a night too.
Even though this game doesn’t mean all that much for South Dakota State, we can expect this to be an up and down affair with two offenses that just love to go go go!
