The Sacramento Hornets advanced to the Big Sky Conference Tournament quarterfinals with their 57 – 54 win over Idaho on Wednesday night. f you recall, the first game of the day was a 9:30 AM tip-off in Boise and the under cruised in easily. I know this because I gave it to everyone who knows me. I LOVE EARLY MORNING UNDERS for breakfast!
Meanwhile, the Bobcats are trying to get back to the Big Sky Conference tournament title game after losing last year’s event to EWU who went on to dance in the NCAA Tournament. As we all know, there will only be one representative from this conference in the big dance so it is win this title or just go back home.
There were 3 games played on Wednesday overall as the 6 – 11 seeds took to the court to get us to the quarterfinals today. Sacramento State, Portland State, and Eastern Washington won their outings and now we are down to 8 teams still playing in the event.
There will be 4 games today with all 8 teams in action starting at high noon local time in Boise with this game between the Hornets and Bobcats.
Montana State secured the top spot in the standings and is the favorite to be the team that hoists the trophy. In case you didn’t know, Montana State is my alma mater so GO CATS!
Sacramento State Hornets
The Hornets scraped by the Vandals on Wednesday so their reward is a bout with the #1 seed in the Big Sky Conference, Montana State! Sacramento State started the tournament as the 8 seed with a 6 – 14 record in conference play this season.
The Hornets have won 5 of their last 6 games and guess who that loss was against? You got it, baby, it was my Bobcats who took them down as we swept the season series against Sacramento State. Both games came down to the wire, however, as a 2-point win and a 6–point win for Montana State was the end result of the two regular-season meetings.
In the win over Idaho on Wednesday morning, Bryce Fowler once again came to the Hornets’ rescue finding his way to a 26-point effort to lift the club to the win. He basically scored half of their points and the bench? Yeah, stop it!
We all know that bench production and 2021-22 have nothing in common all around the landscape of college hoops this season and the Hornets are no exception. Rick Barros III scored 3 points for the Hornets in the win and there is your bench production for the entire game against Idaho.
Will FitzPatrick might as well have stayed on the bus as the Hornets’ third-leading scorer on the season came away with as many points as you did yesterday! You know, like NONE! FitzPatrick is averaging over 10 PPG and if he pulls that shit again tonight I will send him a thank you card!
Montana State Bobcats
Well, you can talk about how hard it is to beat a team three times in a season but I am not listening to any of that bullshit today! Hey, am I biased? Ya fucking think? You must work for NASA!
Listen, if you weren’t impressed by the 24 – 7 record the Cats managed to pull off this season then you just aren’t paying attention or you just don’t give a shit. Not my problem! The Cats are a sound team but covering the spread certainly was not something we did well at all. A dead .500 14 – 14 record ATS is the Bobcats and the one other time I covered them this season it bit me in the ass.
Naturally, the Bobcats are double-digit favorites to take this win but as I said the two meetings these two had this year were tightly contested affairs. The Bobcats never figured out how to pull away from the Hornets albeit a 2 – 0 sweep of the season series. Certain teams just play each other tough and this is a scary proposition.
I am obviously sitting here chomping at the bit to scream Bobcats -10 but my gut is actually pointing me to this total. Just because the Idaho game was a stone-cold under that was situational for me being a game so damn early in the morning. Have you ever gotten up at 5:30 a.m, had to be at breakfast at 6 am, only to be ready for a 9:30 a.m game? Man, I don’t give a shit if you are 40 or 14, that is a hard ask to go out and put up some big game and Idaho sucks!
We take nothing from that contest except for the fact that the line setters seem to think it has an influence on this game. Yeah, no!
Montana State has seen 15 of their totals cruise in towards the Over this season and this will be another lovely effort from the Cats that gets us another cashed ticket. This game starts at high noon which is still early but it is simply not the same circumstance.
The Cats will be playing to survive and advance because of the bigger goal of earning a bid to the big dance. I do believe they will still find a spot in the NIT should everything fall apart so there should still be a post-season for the Cats regardless of winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Xavier Bishop is my man and all of us cats alumni love having him on the floor. That’s usually where you’ll find him because he doesn’t rest much easily leading the team in minutes played this season. Bishop is averaging 13.7 PPG and Jubrile Belo is at 13.5 PPG but he adds 7 boards a night to his ledger. Belo’s game is all about being inside as he converts 59.2% of his shots this season.
CBB Betting Trends:

- Over is 6-1-1 in Bobcats last 8 overall.

- Bobcats are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
