North Carolina Tar Heels
The third-ranked ACC team, according to KenPom, North Carolina slipped up in the conference for the first time and it was against an opponent that isn’t ranked one or two.
The Heels had taken care of their last two opponents since that embarrassing loss at home to Wofford before Christmas, but they left a trip to Florida State with a one-point loss after failing to complete a second half comeback.
UNC outscored FSU by ten in the second 20 minutes but that wasn’t enough. Three Seminole starters had at least 17 points to outdo Joel Berry’s 28.
Berry had to take 23 shots from the field to get those 28, though. The scoring onus has fallen on his shoulders a year after he played hurt in the NCAA Tournament to lead the Heels to the promised land. Luke Maye has been better than expected this season, but the Heels need somebody else to step up and provide some scoring.
Duke is ahead of North Carolina in the KenPom rankings, but one team is ahead of both of them. That team is Virginia.
The Cavaliers are ranked third in the national listing, just behind Michigan State and Villanova. Their defense is the best in the country, allowing just 85 points per possession, adjusted for things like strength and schedule and home games vs. away games.
That’s hardly a surprise. It’s what Tony Bennett does. Every player from those teams that broke onto the national scene four, five years ago are all gone but what remains is a system and some tradition to reinforce it now.
Kyle Guy, a 6’2″ sophomore guard, leads the team with over 15 points per game and 46 percent shooting from three-point land. But this era’s UVA teams have never been about one guy. The Cavaliers come at you with ball movement and body movement in Bennett’s blocker mover offense. And they are especially tough to beat at home.
CBB Betting Trends:

- Under is 15-6 in UNC last 21 vs. Atlantic Coast.
- UVA are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 Fri. games.
