Alabama Crimson Tide
The Crimson Tide are red hot at the moment, winning their last five games, including victories over Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn. They are also 4-0-1 ATS over that span of five games. Nate Oats has one of the most talented teams in the conference this season, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility for the Tide to capture the SEC title for the first time since 2011. Nonetheless, if they are going to be Final Four bound, they need to be competitive in games like this one against the Cats.
The identity of this Alabama offense comes from jacking up a ton of 3-point shots. Alabama is shooting the ball from 3-point range on 45.5% of its field goal attempts, which is the 26th-highest rate in the country, per KenPom. It can justify it, too, because it’s shooting almost 37% from deep in conference play.
The big news coming into this game is the status of point guard Jahvon Quinerly. He’s missed Alabama’s last two games against Florida and Auburn but has the second-highest usage rate on the team. Josh Primo has done a very nice job stepping in and replacing him though from a scoring standpoint but turns the ball over at a much higher rate than Quinerly.
The Tide has four different scorers that eclipse 10 points a game and have a very distributed scoring attack. They average 78.9 points per game which is 67th in all of D-1.
Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky was dead and buried after starting the season 1-6. But don’t give up too quickly because the Wildcats have rattled off three straight games, including a marquee win at Florida on Saturday. If Kentucky can keep this roll going in SEC play their non-conference schedule should not play a factor in whether they are eligible for the tournament or not because they are killing great competition.
Dontaie Allen has been the X-Factor for the Cats. The red-shirt sophomore burst onto the scene late in the Mississippi State game for 23 points and is now an integral part of the offense moving forward. Allen only averaged 6.5 mins per game before that moment and now is going to be huge for the Cats for the rest of the season. It lifts some weight off the shoulders of B.J Boston who is supposed to be Cal’s main guy.
The Wildcats team comes into this game ranked #43 in the latest KenPom rankings. Kentucky has scored 107.7 points per 100 possessions for the year while sporting an average field goal percentage of 42.8%.
Kentucky has really upped its defensive level of play since conference games began. The Wildcats are allowing only 0.97 points per possession in their last three games. Where they’ve exceeded is defending the paint. In SEC play, they’ve held opponents under 40% from inside the arc and have a block rate of over 20%. Coach Cal has the fifth-tallest team in the nation, so he’s clearly using their height to the team’s advantage.
