The Ohio Bobcats are hoping to chase down their 16th win at home along with the top seed in the conference towards the MAC Tournament. Currently, the Bobcats and Toledo Rockets are tied with a 14 – 3 record in MAC play but the Rockets swept the season series with Ohio.
The Bobcats have won 4 of their last 5 outings and are coming off a convincing win over Central Michigan last time out, 76 – 50. Ohio will only have 2 games remaining in the regular season after this game but they’ll have to play BGSU and NIU on the road before the MAC tourney begins.
The Zips are likely headed for a 5-seed when the MAC tourney gets here, although if Buffalo loses their final games Akron could steal the 4th position in the standings. Akron has won their last 2 games and is following up an 82 – 68 win over Bowling Green the last time they took the court.
Akron Zips
The Zips suffered 3 straight losses and fell to 16 – 9 before taking wins from their last 2 games and the goal is to gain as much momentum as they can find headed towards the MAC tourney. The Zips will travel to Ball State on March 1 and will close out the regular season on March 4 against Central Michigan at home.
Akron lost the first meeting with Ohio, 69 – 63, as Mark Sears led the Bobcats with 24 points and Ali Ali scored 22 points for the Zips. Ali is one of four Akron players averaging double-digits this season as he leads the team scoring 13.8 PPG. Right behind him, Enrique Freeman is putting up 13.1 PPG but those 11.2 boards a game is simply impressive. There are not many players in NCAA hoops averaging a double-double, although Freeman was held to 7 points in the first meeting with Ohio.
Xavier Castaneda and Byran Trimble Jr. are taking in 12..6 and 10.4 PPG respectively as the Zips are ranked 192nd in the country scoring 70.6 PPG.
Akron only had 8 players see the court in the first meeting with Ohio and we know the routine by now. Bench production as a whole is so down around NCAA basketball and Akron is just another team that suffers from it. In the loss to Ohio. Mikal Dawson scored 14 points from 35 minutes off the bench and only 2 points were found from Michael Wynn who basically gets one hoop a night averaging just over 2 PPG.
Ohio Bobcats
The Bobcats are going to need to win the conference outright because a tie with Toledo will only end up giving the Rockets the #1 seed for the MAC tourney. I think anyone watching Ohio hoops this season knows that Mark Sears and Ben Vander Pas both have the ability to take over a game. The pair has been seen dominating games all throughout the season and then Jason Carter gets involved.
Jason Carter is a bit of a hit or miss though because we have seen him go cold and also get hot at times this year. Carter only scored 4 points against EMU and CMU but he has found his way to 12 points in each of the last 2 games.
Sears has boosted his average on the season to 19.3 PPG and his 90% from the free-throw line is pretty impressive too. We can expect Sears to be on the court for most of the game as he and Vander Plas easily lead this team with about 35 minutes played apiece.
No one could have predicted how Ohio won their second meeting with Central Michigan last time out. Sears was held to 8 points and Vander Plas barely ended up 10 points in the 76 – 50 win over the Chipps. The star of the game was Tommy Schmock who came off the bench and provided quite a lift for the Bobcats.
Schmock came away with 25 points and 21 of those came from the 7 threes he nailed in the game as the team went 10 for 28 from behind the arc. Jason Carter was the leading starter with 12 points with 6 of those coming from the free-throw line.
CBB Betting Trends:

Free Akron Zips vs. Ohio Bobcats NCAAB Betting Prediction:
Akron is not the pushover they used to be and I expect them to, at least, show up and give Ohio a good fight. Whether they do or not won’t be on me but I do hope they cover the touchdown. The Over sure looks great from where I sit too. Much less you know me by now and when the dog has covered 7 straight games in a series who am I not to expect to come again? Come on now!
