Spurs vs. Thunder Gameday
Game two of the NBA Christmas event serves up the San Antonio Spurs on the road to face the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Both clubs last played each other on Tuesday and had the 24th off, like all the teams in the league. It was the second time in 10 days the teams had met, and it was the second time the Spurs took down the Thunder (130-110).
Victor Wembanyama played but came off the bench while both bigs (Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein) returned to the court for the Thunder.
The latter didn’t matter as the Spurs guards feasted on OKC, begging the question if this is the worst matchup for OKC.
Keldon Johnson led the way for San Antonio with 25 points, joining four other teammates who registered double-figure scoring.
MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was stellar for OKC, scoring 33 points while Jalen Williams chipped in 17 points with eight assists.

Last year, the Thunder won the season series two games to one over the Spurs. In this campaign, the squads were scheduled to play four times, but because of the NBA Cup, they’ll play five times in total. To date, the Spurs are dominating up 2-0 in the series.
San Antonio played well in the absence of Victor Wembanyama, registering a 10-3 record, which has afforded them the opportunity to ease their superstar back into the rotation, having him come off the bench for now. Given they’ve beaten OKC twice in ten days, the strategy certainly isn’t hurting them. On the season, the Spurs hold the second seed with a 22-7 record and bring a seven-game winning streak into this matchup.
Meanwhile, OKC may have met their match, considering they’ve only lost four games all season, with two being against the Spurs and the last loss was a blow-out something they hadn’t experienced until Tuesday. Regardless, they retain the league’s top seed at 26-4 and a 3.5 game lead over the Spurs.

Here is my Spurs Thunder free pick. Not that it’s a must-win for the Thunder but losing another time to the Spurs might start getting in their heads, so expect OKC to be dialed in for a quick start in this match at home.
The main area OKC needs to improve upon is dealing with the three-headed monster of San Antonio (their guards). So far, no one has been able to limit Stephon Castle, who has had his way with OKC in every meeting this season.
Despite the losses to the Spurs the Thunder remain the cream of the crop and still lead the association in most key categories. Hustle plays and transition scoring hasn’t been up to par in the last two meetings so keep an eye on improvement for OKC in that area.
The other key matchup will be Wemby versus Chet in what is perhaps the next biggest rivalry in the association.
Free throws were another category that the Spurs dominated in their recent win, getting to the stripe 24 times versus the measly seven for OKC.
Ultimately, I can’t see OKC losing a third time in a row to San Antonio when they’ve only lost four games this season, but I don’t think they blow out the Spurs, so I’ll take the points.
