Saturday, December 10th, finds the Boston Celtics playing the Golden State Warriors for the first of two scheduled meetings and the first time since the 2022 NBA Finals. Boston will host the second meeting on January 19th.
Both teams played Wednesday with Boston annihilating the Suns 125-98 while the shorthanded Warriors coughed up a four-point lead with 10 seconds remaining (Jazz were 1-718 in same scenario) losing 123-124 to Utah.
Last season, the teams played twice splitting those contests. The Celtics have won 208 of the 346 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Boston Celtics
Witnessing the Celtics in action it almost seems like they’re toying with the other team. In the few instances where they’ve been pushed, it appeared like a switch was flipped and ‘boom’ the game was over.
That was the case versus the Raptors when Jayson Tatum just took over in the third. More frequently they start games punching the other team in the mouth and it’s over before the half like they did in Phoenix versus the Suns.
And this is all happening without their best defender Robert Williams III back yet as well as Al Horford recently missing games. The Warriors’ 73-9 mark is probably safe since Boston already has five losses with approximately 70 percent of the season left to play.
Yet, even if the Dubs’ best season win margin is safe, there could be other records in jeopardy given the Celtics’ dominant offense. Plus, with the defense improving and Williams inching near a return it wouldn’t be surprising if Boston emulates their top-ranked defense from last season (they currently rank 9th overall).
As for the statistical markers, Boston ranks top three across the board averaging 120.8 points (3rd), and is the best shooting team ranking first both from the field 49.3% and the perimeter 40.0%.
They’re improving defensively with opponents averaging 112.0 points (12th), 46.6% field goal shooting (13th), and 35.0% from the perimeter (15th).
Al Horford (quarantine) is questionable for Saturday. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Without Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins the Dubs were poised to win in Utah leading by four points with 13.3 seconds remaining, and then the wheels fell off.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker looked like he was taking a layup so the Warriors’ defense relaxed and NAW seeing Klay Thompson leave his man kicked out to Malik Beasley for a wide-open 3-pointer.
Next, Poole didn’t protect the ball on the inbound and NAW knocked it loose, Kelly Olynyk essentially tackled Poole to take him out of the play (clear uncalled foul) allowing Beasley to grab the ball and throw it to Simone Fontecchio for the dunk and one-point victory.

The loss dampened what was a strong performance from the youngsters, particularly Kuminga with 24 points (on 10 of 13) five rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block.
The Dubs average 117.4 points per game (4th) while shooting 48.01% from the field (7th) and 37.7% from deep (5th).
Defensively, they rank 26th for opponent scoring (116.4) while shooting 46.3% from the field and 34.7% from deep ranking 10th and 12th respectively.
Andrew Wiggins (groin) remains out. Andre Iguodala (hip) is out indefinitely.

Following the win versus the Suns, Tatum told the media they were extra focused to win in Phoenix given recent losses there. So you can bet the first game they earmarked as a ‘must win’ on this year’s calendar was against the team that beat them in the Finals.
You have to wonder if Curry and Green sat against Utah to be extra rested for this match but the fact Wiggins remains out doesn’t bode well for the Warriors stopping the hottest team in the NBA.
