Two disappointing teams begin their series in Chicago as the White Sox host the New York Yankees. With a pair of aging pitchers and struggling offenses facing off, this one could get ugly.
New York Yankees
The Yankees’ lack of offense has really started to take control of the team as they now find themselves nearly 10 games out of first in the mighty American League East.
The Bronx Bombers are in the bottom third of nearly every offensive category, including OBP, OPS, home runs, hits and slugging.
Aging veterans Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez have both been awful, and New York will have to get at least one hitter before the trade deadline.
CC Sabathia will get the start for the Yankees as he looks to get back on the right track.
Sabathia has allowed 11 earned runs in his last two starts. In his eight starts before that, he allowed just seven runs combined.
His two most recent terrible outings have both come at home, so Sabathia should enjoy much better success this time around.
Chicago White Sox
Remember when the White Sox took the American League by storm when they were leading the American League Central at the end of May?
Well, those days are long gone as the South Siders have finally come back down to Earth.
The White Sox find themselves 8.5 games out of first, primarily because any starting pitcher they have not named Chris Sale has been terrible.
Speaking of terrible, James Shields will counter CC Sabathia as he looks to build off his last start. Shields allowed just one earned run against the Twins on June 29 to pick up his first American League win of the season.
That win should come with an asterisk though, because the Twins are downright abysmal.
Shields has allowed 25 runs in his five starts since coming over from the Padres, and in three of those starts, he finished with more walks than strikeouts.

Not only has he been dominant on the road with an ERA that’s barely over 2.00, but James Shields has been equally terrible at home.
I think the Yankees will ride Sabathia’s strong start to a much-needed win.
