The matchup features two teams near the middle of their respective divisions, however with very different records.
The Mets sit behind the surprising Philadelphia Phillies and the powerhouse Washington Nationals, though I believe the Mets will be in second and pushing the Nats before long.
The Brewers sit in 4th in the NL Central and may be able to push for 3rd ahead of the reds, but unlikely to seriously challenge the Cardinals or the Cubs this year.
Wily Peralta currently owns the worst WHIP for a regular starter in baseball at 1.99 on the season.
The Brewers pitching staff as a whole has been pretty dreadful, carrying a collective ERA of 4.92 and 1.51 WHIP.
Peralta will face a tough opposing offense that ranks 3rd in the league in HRs, led by Yoenis Cespedes with 13 on the year which is tied for first in the NL.
Milwaukee’s offense is the bright spot on the year, as Jonathan Lucroy appears to returned to classic Lucroy form after a down season last year.
Ryan Braun also appears to be in pre-thumb injury form, leading the team with a .364 average and 48 hits.
Speedster Jonathan Villar was a nice offseason pickup to fill the cleats of Jean Segura who was dealt in the offseason to Arizona. Villar sits 3rd on the team in average at .285 and has swiped 13 bases so far.
However after these three hitters and maybe Chris Carter (although he is slumping), there is not a lot of depth to the remainder of the order.
New York Mets
The Mets’ offense pivots around star slugger Yoenis Cespedes, as he leads the team in average (.289), homers (13), RBI (33) and OBP (.368).
Michael Conforto also looks like a star in the making, hitting .281 on the year with 6 HR and 21 RBI, following up a strong playoff showing and now in his first full season in the majors.
Neil Walker has been a nice power source at second base with 10 homers, replacing Daniel Murphy who jettisoned in the offseason.
As a team, however, the Mets sit 24th in the MLB, respectively, with only 155 runs scored and a .236 team average.
Stephen Matz is coming off 10 days rest, missing his last start with tightness in his elbow.
While I don’t generally like pitchers coming off injury or an extended absence, Matz declared himself fully healthy and has put together quite a strong season thus dar.
On the year Matz has a 2.86 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP to go along with 35 K and a team-leading 5 wins.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Brewers are 5-5 in their last 10 games
- Wily Peralta has the worst WHIP amongst regular starters in the MLB at 1.99
- Milwaukee is hitting .229 against LHP this season
- Matz is 5-0 in his last 5 starts
- the Mets are 4-6 in their past 10
- NYM are 10-7 at home
Free Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets MLB Prediction:
While the Mets have hit a recent skid in their past 10 games, they have had strong results at Citi Field. As a team, they’ve hit 45 of their 55 homers against RHP and Wily Peralta has been arguably the worst starter in the league this year. Add in the fact that the Brewers are hitting just .229 against LHP and are facing lefty Matz who has a career 1.98 ERA at home. I’ll put my money on Matz and the Mets in this one.
