Play Ball! The Reds and the Braves open the 2022 baseball campaign at Truist Park and the Braves will be hanging the World Series Champion banner tonight. Saturday night, the Braves will receive their World Series rings and that is among the festivities happening over the next 7 days in Atlanta.
This 4-game homestand with the Reds will be followed up by a visit from the Nationals and there is a lot happening over the week. On the 8th, recognition of the Award winners in 2021 will take place and the ring ceremony comes on Saturday as mentioned. When the Nationals arrive, game 1 of that series will be a replica World Series ring for the first 40,000 fans that walk through the gates.
The third game of the series with Washington will feature recognition of the Georgia Bulldogs NCAA Football title so Atlanta will be full of good vibes over the week.
The Reds come into the season opener putting Tyler Mahle on the bump to make his first opening day start of his career. The Braves will respond with Max Fried and the line setters clearly love the Braves to win their opening game of 2022
Cincinnati Reds
Well, the Reds did one thing pretty well this spring and that was scoring runs. Only the Rockies out-bashed the Reds of the National League teams in pre-season baseball (119 – 118) but that was then and this is now.
Tyler Mahle ended 2021 with a 13 – 6 record and a decent 3.75 ERA as he hopes to build on a terrific season. Mahle made all 33 starts he was expected to make and staying healthy is always key for a starters’ confidence. His last start of 2021 was one to forget as he got lit up a bit against the Pirates, but the opening-day nod will surely build even more confidence for the 27-year old. That is a magic number for a lot of fantasy baseball drafters out there because many players associate 27 being the prime of their careers.
Mahle will be hoping that some of this spring training offense will support his cause, especially on the road where wins can be tough to find. The Reds drove home 118 runners in only 18 spring training games and they certainly ended the pre-season winning games. Now, the regular season really changes everything because the reality is that we’re playing games that count now. A great spring means shit if you open the season poorly so keeping that positivity in the dugout will be key.
David Bell enters year 4 as the Reds Manager and he will need to keep motivation high for a team that was 83 – 79 a year ago. No, there was no playoff appearance for the second of his 3 seasons this far and this Braves team is responsible for their only loss in the post-season. If you recall, the Reds lost the Wildcard Playoff game to Atlanta in 2020 in Bell’s only playoff appearance.
Last year’s opening day starter Luis Castillo is still dealing with shoulder soreness and he will miss his first couple of starts. Shogo Akiyama was shown his walking papers the other day after two shit seasons in Cincinnati. What was a fantastic player in Japan turned into a disaster in the U.S and that chews up $8M of wasted money the Reds still have to play him.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves have so much going on this week that they are naming this Championship Week! If you are on the Atlanta Braves mailing list you received that exact notice from the club which is the defending champs of baseball.
Certainly, the names have changed and there are some big ones not here in 2022 that had a big part in the run to the title in 2021. Freddie Freeman is in Hollywood now but Matt Olson has signed to an 8-year contract this off-season to man first base for Atlanta for the rest of the decade.
Eddie Rosario made quite a name for himself in the post-season and it paid off nicely. Rosario inked a 2-year $18M deal to stay in Hotlanta so they will be expecting big things from the former Cleveland product that came over late last year.
Speaking of the Dodgers, their former closer is now in Atlanta because Kenley Janson signed a 1-year deal to come to play for the defending champs.

Free Cincinnati Reds vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
I am taking those Reds to cover the Runline being that the price is only -110. That should change as the game gets closer to the first pitch but it’s what I see today and that’s the bet to make.
