The Chicago White Sox will send the struggling James Shields to the mound to face Matt Boyd and the Detroit Tigers.
While Detroit is more than alive in the American League playoff race, the White Sox are just ready for next season.
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox have faded into the abyss since the middle of June and continue to hover a few games below the .500 mark. But while the offense has been poor, the pitching staff has been rather good.
With ace Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Carlos Rodon, the White Sox rank in the top-half of the majors in ERA, hits allowed and runs allowed.
The team sought to acquire James Shields with the hopes that he’d give their staff a quality No. 4, but Shields has been a complete disaster.
The former San Diego Padre is 3-9 with a bloated 7.49 ERA and a WHIP of 1.77. It’s been a terrible August for Shields, a month he’d love to put behind him at this point.
In 20 August innings, Shields owns a 13.95 ERA and a WHIP of 2.40. He’s allowed 31 runs in five August starts and three times has failed to get out of the fifth inning.
The Tigers remain just a single game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the final Wild Card spot and are hoping to get things going with a win during the series opener.
With Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez in the lineup, the Tigers are always a threat to score at will. The club ranks 4th in both hits and average and 8th in runs.
The pitching staff has been shaky, however, as quality work has been tough to come by outside of Justin Verlander and Michael Fulmer.
Free agent Mike Pelfrey has been a disaster and the Tigers are hoping that 25-year-old Matt Boyd can solidify himself as their No. 3 in the rotation.
The lefty comes in with a 5-2 record to go with a 3.98 ERA.
He’s pitched even better at home, going 3-1 with a 2.82 ERA. Over his last three starts, Boyd has allowed just four earned runs and the Tigers have won all three starts.
