After a sound beatdown of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, the Red Sox look to pull even closer in the AL East as they begin a crucial series with the Cleveland Indians.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox once dominated the AL East, but the resurgence of the Toronto Blue Jays and the always dangerous Baltimore Orioles have them third in the standings.
Still, the Sox remain in the American League playoff picture and need to make a statement in this series.
They were really hoping that Drew Pomeranz would help stabilize their struggling starting rotation, but the former San Diego Padre has struggled since coming over to Bean Town.
Pomeranz is 0-2 since joining the Red Sox and has had mixed results. He’s struggled with his control but has cut the earned runs down over his last two starts where he’s only given up three.
It’s going to be tough for him to get his first win as a member of the Red Sox since he’s countering Josh Tomlin and the first-place Indians.
The Indians still hold a comfortable lead in the AL Central, but the second-place Tigers are nipping at their heels.
The Tribe tried but failed to acquire All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy at the trade deadline but have still kept their separation in the division.
The Indians are extremely well-rounded with a top-five offense and top-five pitching, including today’s starter Josh Tomlin.
Tomlin is 11-5 with a 4.18 ERA and has a K/BB ratio of more than 5/1.
He’s been shelled for 14 runs over his last two starts, but both of those came on the road. He allowed just two earned in seven innings in his previous home start, so taming Boston’s red-hot bats will be quite the challenge.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Red Sox are 2-3 in Pomeranz’s five starts.
- Red Sox are 26-25 on the road.
- Indians are 34-20 at home.
- Indians are 5-5 in Tomlin’s last 10 starts.
- Tomlin has a .275 BAA when pitching at home.
Free Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Indians MLB Prediction:
This series could very well be a postseason preview as both teams try to make their respective playoff pushes. However, both starting pitchers have been struggling and these lineups are both top-five in the majors.
While the Tribe should win this game, there will probably be plenty of runs scored.
