The Toronto Blue Jays will welcome the Baltimore Orioles to the Rogers Center for a 3-game series beginning Monday night. The Orioles are trying to avoid one of their worst seasons in club history after going on one of the longest losing streaks in modern MLB history. The Blue Jays have played under .500 baseball in the second half of August and now find themselves 5.5 games back of a playoff spot.
Baltimore Orioles
What can you say about the Baltimore Orioles? As of this writing, they have the worst record in baseball and .310 winning percentage. They have only managed 3 wins in the month of August so far and went on a truly mind-bending 19-game losing streak from August 3rd to August 25th. That’s more than 3 weeks the club went between wins. It’s a stretch that is amongst the worst ever in MLB history.
The 19-game skid ties the 2005 Kansas City Royals as the longest in the Wild Card era. The 2021 Orioles did manage to snap their losing streak earlier than the 1988 Orioles did, however, as that team went 21 games without winning a game. To find teams who have played worse stretches of baseball than that you have to go all the way back to the 19th Century and teams such as the Louisville Colonels and Cleveland Spiders.
The Orioles will finish the year with a losing record for the 5th straight season. Prior to that, the club had a run where they made the playoffs 3 out of 5 seasons, even making it to the American League Championship Series in 2014.
The Orioles do have something left to play for in 2021, however. Their current winning percentage sits at .310. If they finish the year with that same number it would be the worst the team has ever done since 1939. Even the 1988 Baltimore Orioles, who at one point lost 21 straight games, managed to finish the season with a .335 win percentage.
The Os will send Keegan Akin to the mound for this one. He currently posts a solid 1-8 record with a 7.26 ERA.
Toronto Blue Jays
As the Toronto Blue Jays roll into September, they aren’t completely out of the wild card race, but they do sit 5.5 games back. The Yankees going on a massive run really didn’t help their chances in the American League standings this year. Still, the Jays are a fun team to watch with a lot of good, young hitters.
The Jays went on a run after returning to Toronto a month ago but things have settled for them since. They are 8-10 after August 10th following a 9-3 home stretch in Toronto to start the month.
The last couple of weeks have seen the Jays drop nearly out of the wild card race. As of this writing, they sit 5.5 games back of the 2nd wild card position and 13.5 games back of the Rays for the division.
The Jays will send their ace, Hyun Jin Ryu, to the mound for this one. The Jays have won 9 of the last 12 games with him on the mound.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Orioles are 18-37 in their last 55 games vs. a left-handed starter.
- Blue Jays have won 9 of Ryu’s last 12 starts.
- Orioles are 1-12 in the last 13 games Akin has started.
- Blue Jays are 12-7 at games in Rogers Center dating back to 2019.
- Orioles have dropped their last 9 road games.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
With the Orioles sending Akin and his 7.26 ERA to the mound for this one and the Blue Jays with the 6th best offense in baseball, picking the over (9.5) might not be a bad idea. The ball might be flying out of Rogers Center Tuesday night. With the Jays sending their ace to the hill, they should be able to come out of this one with a win.
