2025 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
The first Grade 1 stakes on the dirt restricted the three-year-olds following the Triple Crown series is the Haskell Stakes, set to go this weekend at Monmouth Park.
On top of the $1 million purse, the Haskell is a ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic, with the winner receiving automatic fees-paid entry into that race in November.
The Haskell has drawn an excellent field, and marks the return to the track for Journalism, winner of the Preakness Stakes and runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
They’ll race 1 1/8 miles on the Monmouth dirt track.

2025 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Jounalism Race Odds: 4-5
Fan favorite Journalism was the only horse to compete in all three of the Triple Crown races, and was a factor in all of them. In fact, at one point he led in all of them, but was only able to seal the deal in the Preakness, after being passed in deep stretch of the Derby and Belmont by Sovereignty.
He doesn’t have to face that rival here, and on paper he’s the clear class of the field. He’s never been out of the money in eight lifetime starts – with five wins – and has put up seven consecutive triple-digit Equibase speed figures, which is more than all the other runners combined.
2025 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Goal Oriented Odds: 4-1
Lightly raced Goal Oriented will make only his fourth lifetime start, coming in off a troubled trip in the Preakness where he ran fourth.
Prior to that he won his maiden race at first asking and then followed that up with an allowance-level win over a sloppy Churchill Downs track on the Kentucky Derby undercard.
He’s been training lights out for this race at his home base of Santa Anita, recording three consecutive bullet works going five furlongs.
Gosger Race Odds: 9-2
The steadily improving Gosger has bumped up his speed figure in each of his four lifetime starts, and two back scored the win in the (G3) Lexington Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland.
He took the lead in the stretch of the Preakness and opened up by five lengths on the field. But he couldn’t hold off the hard charging Journalism and settled for second, beaten by a half-length.
Burnham Square Race Odds: 5-1
Burnham Square got roughed up a bit on the sloppy Churchill Downs track in the Kentucky Derby and ultimately ran sixth. Outside of that race he’s only failed to hit the board once in seven other lifetime starts and has a pair of graded-stakes wins to his name.
He comes in off a second place effort in the (G3) Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill, beaten a half-length going 1 1/16 miles.
Here’s My 2025 Haskell Stakes Free Pick
As much as I might want to play against Journalism at short odds, this is a race where it seems best not to over-think it. If Journalism runs the same race he did in each of the three legs of the Triple Crown, he wins over this field. Despite a gruelling Triple Crown series, he’s had six weeks off since the Belmont, and there’s no reason to think he won’t be in top form.
So conceding the win to Journalism, I’ll try to get some value in the exacta. I’m thinking that with the entry of relatively newer faces like Goal Oriented and Gosger taking money, Burnham Square will be overlooked a bit and might offer real value drifting up from his ML odds. He’s a grinding type of horse that can sit off the a pace and I think there will be speed to run at when they get to deep stretch.
