2025 Florida Derby Handicapping
One of two major prep races for the 2025 Kentucky Derby this weekend – the other being the (G1) Arkansas Derby – the Florida Derby awards qualifying points on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale. Based on the historical points cutoff to make the KY Derby field, that means a win or second-place finish will get you to the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.
The Florida Derby has drawn a field of 10 to race 1 1/8 miles on the Gulfstream dirt track.

2025 Florida Derby Free Pick & Handicapping: Sovereignty Race Odds: 8-5
Already a likely lock for the Kentucky Derby with 60 qualifying points, Sovereignty gained the bulk of that with a last-out win at Gulfstream going 1 1/16 miles in the (G2) Fountain of Youth Stakes.
Last of six early in the FOY, he was able to save ground on the rail and then swung four wide off the final turn to surge down the stretch, and just get up to nail the leader at the wire and win by a neck.
2025 Florida Derby Free Pick & Handicapping: Madaket Road Odds: 7-2
Currently sitting in a tie for 17th place with 31 points in the leaderboard, Madaket Road will likely be able to punch his ticket to the Kentucky Derby with a fourth-place finish, although even fifth could put him on the bubble.
After three consecutive starts in California, he shipped east last out to run second in the (G2) Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. After going straight to the front while putting up pretty solid fractions, he led by as much as 2 1/2 lengths before being run down in the stretch to finish second by 2 1/4.
Disruptor Race Odds: 4-1
Disruptor has only made two previous starts, both at Gulfstream and both sprinting a distance of 7 furlongs. After a close-up third in the first of those, he broke his maiden in impressive fashion, winning by more than nine lengths while putting up a very fast finishing time.
Now he steps up to take on other winners for the first time and makes a big stretch out in distance, although breeding suggests that shouldn’t be a problem.
Tappan Street Race Odds: 5-1
Also with just two races under his saddle, Tappan Street was a first-out winner at Gulfstream going 7 furlongs, and then stepped right up to graded-stakes and made the stretch out to 1 1/16 miles when running second in the (G3) Holy Bull Stakes.
After sitting off the pace in the Holy Bull while having a somewhat wide trip, he was able to make the lead at the top of the stretch but was caught in the final 1/16th to finish 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner, and more than nine lengths clear of the third-place finisher.

Digging into the past performance info on this race, there seems to be a fairly even split between horses that want to be forward early and those that would prefer to stalk or come from a bit further back off the pace.
It’s going to be an interesting battle in terms of jockey tactics, and might just come down to which horse will best handle the distance.
Although he did give up the lead late in the Holy Bull, I think Tappan Street could move forward off of a nearly two-month layoff. I like the fact that trainer Brad Cox has been working him five furlongs while he’s been away, and he’s produced two recent bullet works at that distance. He has good tactical speed and should be ready to roll as they come to the top of the stretch.
So Tappan Street is my pick. Although I’m wary of the hard-charging Sovereignty throwing a monkey wrench in the works, I’m going to try and find some value and use Disruptor in the exacta.
