It’s one turf race where North American-based runners consistently have held their own with their European cousins. The great leveller may be that in Europe any race this short will be run on a straight track, while in North America those horses shipping in from overseas will have to negotiate a turn, for some the first time in their racing careers.
Whatever the reason, one clear thing about the Turf Sprint is that it might be the best Breeders’ Cup race to take a shot on a big bomb. In the past 10 years, only two favourites have won the race, while the average odds on the other eight winners are an eye-catching 21-1.

2025 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Motorious Race Odds: 7-2
Second in this race last year and seventh in 2023, UK-bred but US-raced Motorious gets another crack at it on a course where he’s won four-of-five races to go with that single runner-up finish. He has four wins at the distance and has run second twice in seven tries.
Last out he was second in the (G3) Green Flash Handicap but was placed first due to the disqualification of Reef Runner, who he’ll meet again here. He’s typically one that comes from off the pace, and so will have to work out a trip breaking from the rail.
2025 Turf Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Arizona Blaze Odds: 5-1
The most accomplished of the overseas shippers, Arizona Blaze was second in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint last year going this distance and on this track.
He’s a multiple Group stakes winner in Europe and comes over off a one-length win in the (G1) Fly Five Stakes at the Curragh. That most recent win comes on a track listed as yielding, and it’s worth pointing out that Arizona Blaze is 0-6 on tracks rated good-fast or firm with three seconds and two thirds.
Khaadem Race Odds: 10-1
In contrast to Arizona Blaze, nine-year-old Irish veteran Khaadem has won six of 16 on firm turf with five other in-the-money finishes.
He made his most recent two starts in the US, running third in the (G2) Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs, and then winning the (G2) Woodford Stakes at Keeneland by a neck.
Bucanero Fuerte Race Odds: 20-1
A winner of six-of-12 lifetime and two-of-four at this distance, Bucanero Fuerte had the early lead in the previously mentioned Flying Five Stakes before settling for third behind the winning Arizona Blaze.
That race was held over a yielding course, and this might be one that wants a firm track which he will get at Del Mar for the first time in his career,
Here’s My 2025 Turf Sprint Free Pick
The one thing you can say for sure about this race is that it’s going to be close with eight of the past 10 races decided by a half-length or less.
History dictates taking a shot here to pad your BC bankroll for the rest of the day, and I’m going to do that by taking the wily veteran Khaadem for the win. I like the fact his recent form in North America is very good, and makes it clear he doesn’t mind running a left-hand turn.
This may not be his best distance, but he has won three times in nine starts going five furlongs.
