2025 Sprint Handicapping
There’s back-to-back speed races at Breeders’ Cup on Saturday, with this six furlong Sprint race on the dirt following right after the five furlong Turf Sprint.
Unlike that race, however, the dirt Sprint typically runs closer to form. While only one favourite has won in the past 10 years, there’s only been one double-digit winner in that span as well.
Although speed is the name of the game here, it’s worth noting that only one winner in the past 10 was able to take the field gate-to-wire, that being Drefong in 2016. Typically the horse that wins this race is one that can sit a good stalking trip just behind the pacesetter and then power away through the stretch.

2025 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Bentornato Race Odds: 5-2
After running second in this race last year, Bentornato went on the shelf for almost a year, only coming back to the races this past September.
He made the most of that return in winning a listed stake at Churchill Downs by more than five lengths. This is a much tougher field for his second start off the layoff, but it’s notable that he’s four-for-five at the distance.
2025 Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Kopion Odds: 7-2
A filly taking on males, Kopion would be the ML favourite in the BC Filly & Mare Sprint, but connections think so highly of her they’re willing to take a shot her for double the total purse money.
She’s finished in the money in eight-of nine lifetime races with five wins and three seconds. She also has a win and one runner-up finish at Del Mar to her name. At the same time it’s worth noting she’ll be cutting back here to the shortest distance in her career so far.
Lovesick Blues Race Odds: 10-1
Not a household name by any means, Lovesick Blues might be the most interesting horse in any Breeders’ Cup race this weekend simply because of his career history.
He’s run 22 times on turf, winning three and finishing in the money nine other times. He’s run twice on synthetic surfaces winning one and running second in the other. But his best surface is dry dirt, where he’s won six of 18 starts and finished second-or-third nine other times.
He prepped for this by running second in a California state-bred turf stake, but in his start just prior to that he won the (G1) Bing Crosby Stakes on this track and at this distance.
Mullikin Race Odds: 15-1
All summer long, the best dirt sprinter in the US was a horse named Book ’em Danno, whose connections have oddly decided to skip the Breeders’ Cup.
In two of his last three races Mullikin finished second to Book ’em Danno, although last out he was a no show, running seventh in the (G1) Forego Stakes in a race won by….Book ’em Danno.
That was the worse race of his career, and can probably be tossed. He’s been training lights out leading up to this, and without his rival in the field he may just have a shot.
Here’s My 2025 Sprint Free Pick
This is a strange race to handicap, with horses coming in off of all kinds of weird results, long layoffs, needing to consider the filly factor, and taking into consideration the defending race champ in Straight No Chaser is also in the field.
That being said, 5-2 isn’t a bad price on the favourite and I suspect that number might drift up. Bentornato seems to have shaken off the rust looking at how he ran in his return, and while that might not have been a strong field, he did score the highest Equibase speed figure of his career.
I’ll take him even at a low price and look for value in the exacta.
