2025 Mile Handicapping

After all the excitement of the Classic dies down, the Breeders’ Cup gets back on the grass with a race simply called the Mile.

My personal favourite of the BC races, the Mile is also a tough handicapping puzzle with no clear path to victory. Of course the European shippers are always tough, but North American horses can hold their own.

Horses that have hit the board – but not always won – in the Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland and/or the Woodbine Mile in Canada, prior to the BC have won five times in the past 10 years.

It’s also important not to dismiss females going up against males in this race as they’ve won two of the past 10.

2025 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Notable Speech Race Odds: 5-2

Third in this race last year, Notable Speech has had trouble finding the winner’s circle for the most part in 2025, going without a win in his first four starts this year.

He’s been improving lately, running second in a Group 1 stake in France, and then followed up on that by wining the (G1) Woodbine Mile, albeit against a somewhat weak field. He’s won six of 12 at the distance, but only two of seven on firm ground.

2025 Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Rhetorical Odds: 5-1

Perhaps the best North American hope in all the BC turf races, Rhetorical has been nearly unbeatable, winning five of six lifetime and four straight in 2025.

He’s two-for-two at this distance, and while most of his wins have come in lower-level races, he stepped up to Grade 1 company last out and won the Keeneland Turf Mile in a race that came back with a very fast time.

Sahlan Race Odds: 6-1

An Irish-bred that has done all his running in France, Sahlan comes into this on the strength of back-to-back wins at the distance. Last out he won by a nose in the (G1) Prix du Moulin de Longchamp where he took on older horses for the first time.

Something of a distance specialist, all five of his most recent starts have been at one mile. He’s won three of six overall with one runner-up finish, including one win in two tries on firm turf.

Johannes Race Odds: 8-1

Second in this race last year, Johannes most recently won the (G2) City Of Hope Mile at Santa Anita, his fifth win in seven starts at the distance. That’s the same race he won last year before taking the runner up spot in the BC Mile, missing the win by just 3/4 of a length.

Overall he’s won nine of 15, although it’s noted that number includes three starts on dirt early in his career where the best he could manage was a single third-place run.

Here’s My 2025 Mile Free Pick

As mentioned earlier I’m a big fan of the flat mile on the grass, and I’m looking forward to this one because I think there’s value to be had in fading the favourite.

In taking the Woodbine Mile, Notable Speech won his first race in seven tries and that’s what it took for him to even get in this race. I don’t think he likes Del Mar, and I’m not sure he likes a firm surface, either.

He’s light on big race experience, but I think Rhetorical beat a much better field in the Turf Mile in what was a much faster race overall. It’s tough to win five races in a row for any horse, but if he runs back to that effort he wins here.
