2025 Juvenile Handicapping
Not only is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile the first BC race of the weekend to offer a $2 million purse, it’s also a qualifying race for the 2026 Kentucky Derby, with the top five finishers earning points toward a spot in the gate for the Run for the Roses next May.
The Juvenile is run at 1 1/16 miles on the Del Mar dirt track.
As indicated above, over the past 10 years the Juvenile has produced a mix of favourites and double-digit long shot winners. Seven of the past 10 winners won their last start prior to running in the Juvenile, all seven at the Grade 1 stakes level. Three of those wins were in the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita, three others were in the Breeders’ Futurity Stakes at Keeneland.
Four of 10 winners had a previous win at Del Mar.

2025 Juvenile Free Pick & Handicapping: Ted Noffey Race Odds: 4-5
In his short career Ted Noffey has not really been tested, winning three consecutive races by a combined 12 3/4 lengths.
The last two of those wins have come at the Grade 1 level, and include the Hopeful Stakes going seven furlongs at Saratoga, and the Breeders’ Futurity going 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland. In both of those last two he earned a plus-100 Equibase speed figure.
2025 Juvenile Pick & Handicapping: Brant Odds: 5-2
With two starts at Del Mar, Brant is also a two-time winner, breaking his maiden going 5 1/2 furlongs and then winning the (G1) Del Mar Futurity by a length after taking the field gate-to-wire.
He stretches out here and tries two turns for the first time, and to that end he has been putting in a series of six furlong works. Expect him to show speed from the gate and try to take them all the way.
Blackout Time Race Odds: 5-1
After running second on debut at Churchill Downs, Blackout Time moved to Ellis Park to break his maiden over one mile in impressive fashion. He broke running and led wire-to-wire, finishing more than nine lengths ahead of the second and third-place runners, both of whom came back to win their next start.
He then went up against Ted Noffey in the Breeders’ Futurity, where he was a game-but-clear second best.

Intrepido Race Odds: 12-1
Intrepido didn’t show much on debut, running fourth in a race that was won by Brant. But since that effort he’s won two straight, the first at Del Mar and the second in the (G1) American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita.
That second win was at this distance, making him and Ted Noffey the only two in the field with wins at the distance.
Here’s My 2025 Juvenile Free Pick
If you’re playing any multiple race wagers on Friday, I think this is the one you could single as Ted Noffey has been just that good.
There’s no doubt Brant has talent and a lot of speed, but I consider the fact the horse that ran second and third in his two races in the form of Civil Liberty is in this race at 30-1 odds. In other words, I question the fields he’s been beating even while acknowledging he’s fast.
And given the fact he has yet to try going this far, I’m even going to try and beat him in the exacta.
