Before we can give you our expert 2025 Filly & Mare Turf free pick, we have to break down the entries! In fact, we’d love to hear from you after you’ve given this post a read to see if you see an angle that we don’t!
2025 Filly & Mare Turf Handicapping
The final event of the 2025 Breeders’ Cup is the Filly & Mare Turf, open to female horses age three and older. They’ll race a tough 1 3/8 miles on the Del Mar grass.
Once again this is a BC turf race that has been dominated by horses from overseas, with eight-of-10 past winners being bred in Europe or Japan, while last year’s winner, Moira, was a Canadian bred.
Immediate past success has not necessarily been a requirement in winning the F&M Turf, as only three winners had won their previous race. More significantly seems to be the fact nine winners had run in a Grade 1 race in North America or a Group 1 race in Europe in their last start.
It’s also important to be aware that in Europe, top fillies and mares often race against males, something that is less frequent in North America. So a European filly or mare that has been coming up just short against males could be strong contender here against their own gender.
Following a series of Breeders’ Cup races that historically produce low-priced winners, the Filly & Mare Turf is a great opportunity to find value to close out the weekend. Only one favourite has won in the past 10 years, while the average odds on the nine others come in at 8-1.

2025 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Gezora Race Odds: 7-2
The French-bred Gazora is a multiple Group stakes winner in her native France, but she threw up a clunker last out in the Prix d’Arc de Triomphe, running 13th in the 17 horse field.
She’s been very good prior to that, finishing in the money in seven straight races with four wins. She’s won at distances ranging from a mile to 1 1/2 miles, but she’s 0-for-2 in races over firm ground.
2025 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: She Feels Pretty Odds: 4-1
Kentucky bred She Feels Pretty has been on a roll over the past year, winning five of her past six races with four of those wins coming at the Grade 1 level.
Her only recent defeat came two back when she lost ny a head in the (G1) Diana Stakes at Saratoga, where she uncharacteristically gave up the lead late. But she rebounded from that to win the (G1) EP Taylor at Woodbine by a head going 1 1/4 miles.
Cinderella’s Dream Race Odds: 9-2
Second in this race last year as the favourite, Cinderella’s Dream was first or second in her first four starts this year, but has tailed off recently losing her last two.
Three of her last four races have been at one mile, and it’s a bit hard to tell if she actually prefers this distance of ground. She’s won eight of 14 lifetime with four other in-the-money finishes.
Diamond Rain Race Odds: 6-1
If not for a slow start in the EP Taylor, Diamond Rain could be riding a three-race win streak as she still managed to rally up and grab second by an ever-diminishing head.
She’s a Group 3 winner in the UK, and while most of her wins have come on softer ground, previous to the EP Taylor she won on hard synthetic and the EP Taylor was also run over firm turf.
Here’s My 2025 Filly & Mare Turf Free Pick
While a Kentucky bred filly or mare hasn’t won this race in 10 years, it feels like this isn’t the strongest field of Euros and She Feels Pretty might be the best North American runner to take her shot in a very long time.
Despite the loss in the Diana, she typically has a very relentless running style in grinding down her foes, and when she hits the front she is very difficult to pass.
I’m going to take her for the win, and hope that homebred sentiment won’t result in the odds dropping too far from the morning line.
- She Feels Pretty
- Diamond Rain
- Cinderella’s Dream
- Gezora
