Before we can give you our expert 2025 Filly & Mare Sprint free pick, we have to break down the entries! In fact, we’d love to hear from you after you’ve given this post a read to see if you see an angle that we don’t!
2025 Filly & Mare Sprint Handicapping
The opener of Saturday’s nine-race Breeders’ Cup lineup, the Filly & Mare Sprint is open to female horses age three and older, racing 7 furlongs on the Del Mar dirt track.
Lately the F&M Sprint has been a bit of a feast-or-famine event from a betting point of view, with four heavy favourites and four double digit long shots hitting the wire first in the past 10 years. In 2017, the F&M Sprint produced one of the biggest exotic payouts in BC history, when Bar Of Gold (67-1), Ami’s Mesa (18-1), Carina Mia (20-1) and Skye Diamonds (6-1) claimed the top four spots, triggering a $1 superfecta payout of just over $176,000.
From a handicapping angle, three-year-old fillies have won three of the last 10, with four-and-five year olds taking the other seven.
Odds listed here are provided by the Del Mar track handicapper.
2025 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Sweet Azteca Race Odds: 2-1
Five-year-old veteran Sweet Azteca is relatively lightly raced with only nine career starts, of which she’s won 7 and finished third once.
She comes into this off back-to-back wins, the most recent of which was going 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar in the (G3) Rancho Bernardo Handicap. Prior to that she was the winner of the (G2) Great Lady M Stakes at Laurel. She finished two lengths clear of the highly regarded Kopion, who will be taking on males in the BC Sprint.
2025 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Hope Road Odds: 4-1
Kopion also features in the race running lines of Hope Road, as three times in row recently they’ve done battle, with Hope Road running second twice and fourth once.
But she comes into this off a confidence-building win in the (G1) Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga, finishing two lengths in front of multiple-graded stakes winner Scylla who was fourth in this race last year. Overall she has a win and two runner-up finishes at the distance and has won three times and run second twice at Del Mar.
Splendora Race Odds: 8-1
Although she has yet to capture a graded-stakes win, Splendora is another California based mare in good form lately with two consecutive wins.
After winning at 3 1/2 lengths in an allowance event at Del Mar, she went into restricted stakes company at Santa Anita and won by an easy 5 1/2 lengths, with both the second and third-place runners winning their next races.
She’s a perfect three-for-three at Del Mar, with four wins and four runner-up efforts in nine lifetime starts.
Vahva Race Odds: 12-1
Despite the fact she only has one win in her past six starts, Vahva earns a look to get in the money simply because of her past success at 7 furlongs, which is something of a specialty distance.
In 12 tries at the distance, she has been in the money 10 times with six wins, three seconds and one third. Although it should also be noted she was eighth in this race last year at the same track.
Here’s My 2025 Filly & Mare Sprint Free Pick
After reeling off four consecutive wins through last summer Sweet Azteca was an unusual fourth, beaten more than eight lengths, in her final start of 2024. So the racing world was watching to see what this year would bring.
After an extended layoff and trainer switch she’s come back with a vengance, with two decisive wins over the summer. She should be at the top of her game and coming back to a track where she’s won twice in two tries. She hasn’t yet gone 7 furlongs, but she has several wins at 6 1/2 and that’s good enough for me.
She won’t provide any value, but I won’t be betting against her to win.
- Sweet Azteca
- Splendora
- Hope Road
- Vahva
