2025 Distaff Handicapping
Race #4 of Breeders’ Cup Saturday gets us to the heart of the Breeders’ Cup card, starting with the Distaff, open to female horses age three and older. They’ll be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Del Mar dirt track.
Last year’s Distaff was dominated by superstar Thorpedo Anna, who would go on to be named the 2024 Horse of The Year. One of the more remarkable BC stories regards Beholder, who won the Distaff in 2013 as a three-year-old, and then won again in 2016 at age six.
Six of the past 10 Distaff winners won their final prep before the BC, all at the Grade 1 level, while two others ran second in Grade 1s. Four times in that span the winner of the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes was a next-out winner of the Distaff.
Only two three-year-olds have won on the past 10 years, including Thorpedo Anna last year. Both of those won the (G1) Cotillion Stakes as their final prep.

2025 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Seismic Beauty Race Odds: 9-5
As recently as April Seismic Beauty was running in first level allowance races, but after scoring a 10 length win at Santa Anita she stepped up to graded stakes and has now won her last two.
The first of those was a five-length win in the (G2) Santa Margarita Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. Second place runner Splendora was a next out winner and will run in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. Next up she won the 1 1/16 mile (G1) Clement L Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar over Kopion, who will run in the BC Sprint.
2025 Distaff Free Pick & Handicapping: Nitrogen Odds: 4-1
The versatile Nitrogen has spent most of her career racing on turf, where she was a graded-stakes winner and compiled a record of four wins, two runner-up finishes and one third in eight starts.
Since switching to dirt she has a win going 1 1/4 miles in the (G1) Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, and most recently a runner-up finish by a head in the (G1) Spinster Stakes at Keeneland.
Clicquot Race Odds: 10-1
After running sixth in her debut at Gulfstream back in March, Clicquot has won four in a row, capping her ascension up the ranks by taking the (G1) Cotillion by a neck
That race also produced her lifetime best Equibase speed figure of 107, and if she can take another step forward she should be in the mix here coming from off the pace.
Gun Song Race Odds: 30-1
Second in the Cotillion last year by just a neck to Thorpedo Anna, Gun Song comes in off a win in the (G1) Beldame beating the heavily favoured multiple graded stakes winner Randomized in the process.
That race was at 1 1/8 miles, and it’s her record of two wins and one runner-up finish in five starts at this distance that indicates to me she could get a piece of this at huge odds.
Here’s My 2025 Distaff Free Pick
Sometimes in racing a long shot will jump up and run the race of its life and refuse to be beat, and that’s what I think happened to Nitrogen last out when losing to 18-1 Gin Gin in the Spinster. So I’m going to draw a line through that race and make Nitrogen my pick here.
It may eventually prove out that she’s better on the turf than dirt, and I’m not crazy about the fact she only got in her first workout since the Spinster last week. But I’m a sucker for this type of horse that can win on dual surfaces, at distances from 1 mile to 1 1/4 miles, on off tracks and fast dirt. Of all the horses running in the BC, she’s the one I’ll be cheering for the loudest.
As for Seismic Beauty, there’s no doubt she’s had some impressive wins, but I think it’s important to note her last two came over runners-up that that are sprinters, probably going a distance that was too far. I think she’s taking a big step up in class here against a bunch of battle tested distance runners.
