2025 Dirt Mile Handicapping
Following on the heels of the Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf comes the Dirt Mile, the second-to-last race on the Breeders’ Cup card. One of the great storylines of recent BC history concerns Knicks Go, who won the 2020 Dirt Mile and then stepped up to win the 2021 BC Classic.
Since there are very few high-level one mile stakes races on dirt in North America, horses that run in the Dirt Mile are typically coming in off slightly shorter or slightly longer races. At Del Mar the Dirt Mile requires two turns, so horses that have already won at slightly longer distances that required two turns have an advantage.
Nine of the past 10 winners of the Dirt Mile had finished first or second in a race one mile or longer in their previous start. Two-time winner Cody’s Wish had won at 7 furlongs prior to capturing his second Dirt Mile by a nose.

2025 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Nysos Race Odds: 8-5
The speedy Nysos has won five of his six lifetime starts, with his only defeat coming in a dead heat for second on a sloppy Churchill Downs track. At that, he was only beaten a neck by Mindframe who will run in the BC Classic.
He’s 1-for-1 at the distance, and 2-for-2 at Del Mar. He won his maiden debut by 10 1/2 lengths, and every one of his victories since then has been by open lengths.
2025 Dirt Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Full Serrano Odds: 7-2
Argentina-bred Full Serrano shipped up to California last year and has been first or second in all five of his North America races.
Three of his wins have come at Del Mar and all three have been at this one-mile distance. In fact, his only two losses have come when stretching out beyond one mile, and in both of those he ran second.
Citizen Bull Race Odds: 10-1
The winner of the 2024 BC Juvenile, Citizen Bull showed lots of speed when he took the early lead in this year’s Kentucky Derby, but the distance of 1 1/4 miles was beyond him and he faded to 15th.
This is more to his liking, as he has two wins in two tries going a mile, and is also three-for-four at Del Mar.
Chancer McPatrick Race Odds: 15-1
There were a lot of high hopes for Chancer McPatrick last year as he won two Grade 1 races as a two-year-old, but he never lived up to the hype and was well beaten in his next four starts.
Two back he was able to score a win in a restricted stake at Saratoga. While he probably has no shot at winning, he’s a late runner who could get up for a piece if the pace melts down in front of him.

I really want to try and beat a low-priced Nysos here, but looking at the way this race shapes up on paper I don’t think I can.
I expect there’s going to be a lot of early speed on and I think that sets up perfectly for his stalking style. It’s not ideal that he hasn’t raced since late July, but he’s been putting in good works for this, including a last out six-furlong breeze in 1.11 seconds flat.
