At first glance it looks like Detroit not only has the value in Friday night’s game at Chicago – but should possibly be a favorite. After all the Pistons 2 wins are way more than the Bulls have with 1.
Chicago is not only a favorite, but is a somewhat hefty -3.5 on the spread. Does that make this game a trap play and we should actually back the lowly Bulls?
Detroit Pistons
Detroit’s modest 2-3 start could be considered a win considering they have played the early part of their season without Blake Griffin. The Pistons have actually played good offense in Griffin’s absence, but their D has struggled.
3 of 5 Detroit games have gone ‘over’ the total on the season which is saying a lot for the Pistons – on the offensive end at least. The Pistons actually rank #4 in the NBA in field goal shooting and have the 2nd best 3 point percentage.
The man to watch on Friday night is Andre Drummond. The Pistons big man has posted a 21 point, 22 rebound and 18/18 night in his last two. Chicago ranks as the 7th worse defense vs. the C in the league. Uh-oh.

There are two areas where the Pistons are vulnerable and the reasons they are underdogs at the United Center. The first is defense. The Pistons rank 27th in opponents field goal % and have allowed 117+ in 3 of the last 4.
The other point of concern for Detroit is injuries. Not only is Griffin out, Derrick Rose could miss a game in his hometown as he battles a hamstring issue. Reggie Jackson is also fighting back issues making Detroit’s back court (potentially) very thin.
Chicago Bulls
Even if Detroit is injured, on the road, playing bad defense, and/or sleeps through the first three quarters of the game you’d still think they are favored vs. the Bulls. Chicago has been that bad.
Not only are the Bulls losing with a 1-4 record out of the gate. They are losing big and to bad teams. The Bulls have lost at New York and at Cleveland the last two games. They also dropped a season opener to Charlotte.
In that regard, Chicago has just played 1 game at the United Center this season, an 84-108 loss to Toronto. The Bulls have actually held 3 of the last 4 opponents to 110 or less overall on defense – they just can’t or don’t score.

what’s kind of frustrating for Bulls fans is that the team has regressed in nearly every game this season. Lauri Markkanen had a monster 32/17 game to start the season but followed that up with back-to-back 9 point efforts.
Youngster Coby White has shown flashes, especially scoring 17 and 25 his first two games. He’s followed that up with 8,5, and 8 points the next three in limited minutes. Apparently in Chicago if you do good, your PT goes down.
