Underwood finished with 11 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions while gaining a full season of experience against Big Ten competition.
Underwood enters his sophomore season as one of Michigan’s four team captains. He is the first sophomore captain in program history and remains a major part of the Wolverines’ plans under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. Michigan brings back six offensive starters around its young quarterback.

Lowry rushed for 963 yards and 14 touchdowns, setting Western Michigan single-season quarterback records in both categories. His breakout season earned him MAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-MAC honors. The Broncos enter 2026 with a proven dual-threat quarterback who played a major role in their MAC championship and six-game winning streak.

Broncos Wolverines Free Pick: Michigan -28.5
Here is my Broncos Wolverines free pick: Michigan -28.5 is a hefty price, but the Wolverines have the kind of physical advantage that can turn this ugly. I’m comfortable laying it.
Michigan finished 9-4 last season and ended the year by pounding Texas 41-10 in the Citrus Bowl. The Wolverines scored 27 or more points in 8 games and showed they could create separation when the offense found its rhythm.
Western Michigan had an excellent 2025 season, but facing Michigan in Ann Arbor represents a major jump in competition.
Give the Broncos credit. They went 10-4, won the MAC and allowed only 17.9 points per game, so Michigan shouldn’t expect them to simply disappear after the opening kickoff.
However, Michigan allowed only 19.5 points per game against a considerably tougher schedule. The Wolverines held 6 opponents below 20 points, and that defense gives them a chance to cover without needing an offensive track meet. Big difference.
Western Michigan could hang around early, but Michigan’s size and depth should become more noticeable as the game moves along.
Additionally, playing at Michigan Stadium puts even more pressure on a Broncos offense stepping up significantly in class. Michigan can lean on the running game, control possession and eventually force Western Michigan into uncomfortable situations.
That’s where I expect this game to open up.
I’m laying the points at home with the Michigan Wolverines -28.5.
