Week 1 college football sees the Mountaineers and Panthers meet at Acrisure Stadium on Thursday night.
The Panthers are favored by -7.5 points in this old-school rivalry game, and we have a 51 showing on the total.
West Virginia Mountaineers
The Mountaineers might have hit one big jackpot when they went into the transfer portal and nabbed JT Daniels from Georgia in the off-season. It’s one thing to bring in a quarterback looking for more playing time, but bringing in a player with a championship ring to try to win another one? Priceless!
So, the expectations will certainly be nice and high in Morgantown, but what a way to start the season then on the road against Pittsburgh! Oh, baby, this is a rivalry that goes back much further than any of us have been around and you better be prepared for the Backyard Brawl this year again!
I am not sure where you were in 1895 when they first met to play some football, but I am going on a limb and saying you missed it, LoL. history was made again in 1921 when the first game heard on the radio happened between these two programs and the legend has just grown from there.
Let’s just say that this is the 105th meeting between these two and let’s take it to the field.
The addition of Daniels is certainly a big one, and moving to the Big 12 from the SEC shouldn’t set an ounce of fear in his mind when it comes to opposing defenses. Hey, I am not trying to insult any programs in this conference but if you’d like to compare the SEC to the Big 12? Meet me in the backyard and we can have our own little brawl about it if you like.
Neal Brown only has 4 starting defenders returning to the fray for this year’s campaign, and his front line is the best unit on the field. The issue won’t be up front for this defense, it will be the rest of the field that has to be covered. There is not a lot of depth to speak of at linebacker and in this back field, so expect a few points to come from Mountaineers’ games this year.
Pittsburgh Panthers
Well, the Panthers don’t have #8 running the offense this season, but the line setters don’t seem to think that Pitt will struggle moving the ball this year. Kenny Pickett is no longer wearing a Panthers uni, so the Panthers also decided to get into the transfer window to find some experience at QB.
Pat Narduzzi announced last Wednesday that Kedon Slovis, transfer from USC, will be the opening day starter for Pitt, and he only brings 7,576 passing yards with him. That’s all? I mean talk about a nice way to surround the other 8 returning offensive starters and this might be one high-scoring game tonight.
To be honest, the total was 54 and I see it has fallen all the way to 51 so someone out there is convinced the line was set too high. I am not that guy, and I believe the public is full of shit and has no idea what they are doing playing this Under.
Let’s not lose track of the fact that all five offensive linemen looked at each other after last year’s bowl game and decided then and there to all return again, knowing Pickett was leaving for the NFL. That’s 145 starts among them, and that’s just the sound we want to hear to expect points to pour into the scoreboard.
