Week 6 college football sees the Mountaineers and Bears meet at McLane Stadium.
The West Virginia Mountaineers have already put themselves behind the 8-ball starting conference play with a pair of losses. A late field for the Red Raiders ripped out the hearts of the homecoming crowd in Morgantown last weekend and now they must pick up the pieces and try to rebuild some confidence.
The Bears suffered their first defeat of 2021 last weekend at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys who have suddenly found a defense in a conference not known for such a thing over the years.
The Mountaineers hold a 6 – 3 edge in this series that started in 2012 when West Virginia made the move to this conference. A bye-week awaits West Virginia next weekend while the Bears will host BYU before their bye the following weekend.
The Bears are favored by 3 points in this Big 12 Conference matchup, although it is slowly being seen dropping to -2.5 at a handful of sites as the week goes on.
West Virginia Mountaineers
The Mountainers are already in a bit of trouble starting the season 0 – 2 in Big-12 play, and now they face a favored Baylor team in Waco that only has 1 loss against them in 2021. All 3 of West Virginia’s losses have come down to the final possession and last week a field goal for Texas Tech ruined homecoming, 23 – 20, with only 16 seconds left to play.
West Virginia controlled the clock, had more first downs, more passing and rushing yards than the Red Raiders but still managed to lose the game as penalties and a costly fumble turned the tide.
Overall, West Virginia ranks 42nd in the passing game but their 5 turnovers put them as far back as 120th in the nation. The Mountaineers have been stellar against the opponent’s running game in 2021, limiting teams 87.8 ypg ranking them 11th in the land.
Jarret Doege has performed well under center for head coach Neal Brown who is in year 3 with the program in Morgantown. Doege has completed 98 of his 150 attempts completing 65.3% of his dropbacks for 1,207 yards and 7 scoring strikes. However, and there is always a however, right? However, the 4 INT and 9 sacks need to be cleaned up as the season reaches its halfway point and only conference games are left to play.
Garrett Green has become the surprise at QB as he is the dual-threat guy that Doege simply isn’t Green has completed 8 for 14 with 88 yards in the passing game, but he has also run the ball for 175 yards with 3 scoots to paydirt
Baylor Bears
Da Bears were basically manhandled by the Cowboys’ defense last weekend as their first loss came picking up only 10 first downs while committing 9 penalties. Not a good combination for winning games and 107 rushing yards all day won’t help matters much either.hat 7 / 0
While the win over Iowa State to reach 4 – 0 had this team looking so together, last weekend’s result really pointed out some major issues for Baylor. Let’s not lose track of the first 3 games this team played as Texas Southern, Texas State, and Kansas are three sorry f**king programs!
As soon as Baylor had to face a decent team, they really looked bad although starting QB Gerry Bohanon has done a Yoeman’s job, for the most part, this season. Bohanon has completed 78 of his 116 attempts and his 7 / 0 TD to INT ratio is impressive. When you don’t throw the ball to the wrong team, good things can happen.
Bohanon can certainly use his running ability to left this team as he has secured 125 yards and 5 TD on the ground in 2021.
Abram Smith and Treston Ebner have amassed 858 rushing yards as a tandem and Smith has 6 scores to his credit. Ebner is still looking for his first score of the season in the run game but he has 7 grabs and one score in the passing game.
