Week 5 college football sees the Huskies and Bruins meeting at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, on Friday night.
The Huskies are favored by -3.5 points in this Pac-12 matchup, and we have a 66.5 showing on the total.
The Huskies are ranked 15th in the AP Poll and 18th in the Coaches Poll, and they’re favored at the Rose Bowl to take down the 4 – 0 Bruins. Both teams enter the contest with unblemished 4 – 0 records, but one of them will be leaving the park with their first loss of the 2022 campaign on Friday night in Pasadena.
I would say that the offense is the reason why the Huskies are favored by just over a field goal with the hook in play, but what are they doing that UCLA is not? Both teams have produced points with ease through 4 games and that is why the total went from 65 to 66.5 over the last day or two.
Someone has to be the best, and the Huskies are the ones when it comes to passing yards per game. Washington transfer Michael Penix, Jr. left Indiana and the Huskies Head Coach Kalen DeBoer jumped on the chance to bring him to Seattle to finish his career. Deboers’ first season with the Huskies is going okay thus far, as it includes wins over Michigan State and he’s already got a conference win under his belt from last weekend’s win over Stanford, 40 – 22.
Penix has accumulated a lovely 12 to 1 TD to INT ratio to open his Husky ledger, and I will go on a limb and say that he will pick up a touchdown with his legs either this weekend or the next against Arizona State. His contribution to the run game isn’t overwhelming, but he will get his opportunity to tuck a ball in and make his way to the end zone. I will call for it to happen this weekend in a big game that he will need to come up large.
Penix has toppled the 300-yard mark in all 4 games as he leads the nation’s top passing attack that averages 368.8 YPG. The 530.8 total yards per game is good enough to put Washington at #5 in the land and those 44 PPG are simply stout!
UCLA did pick up a few votes to land in the top-25, but they are not quite there yet despite the perfect 4 – 0 mark to open the season. In case you missed it, UCLA has won 11 of the last 15 meetings with Washington and they are 8 – 1 in this building against the Huskies the last 9 meetings.
Scared of Washington? Oh stop it, this team has zero fear in a big-bad Husky squad that still has a lot to prove to all of us. By the same token, a good bashing of Chip Kelly is easy to find on the net because his ability to lead a program to glory can undoubtedly be scrutinized.
The Bruins may not be the #1 passing team in college football, but DTR is still putting up some decent numbers to begin his senior campaign. Dorian Thompson-Robinson has also only thrown a single interception to eight TD passes in 2022. DTR took home 1st-Team All-Pac 12 honors a season ago even though his leadership has been questioned by many an outlet. Even though he lost one of the best tight ends in college football to the NFL Draft, this offense has leadership all around the field to support him.
Zach Charbonnet has already put 293 rushing yards on his stat sheet, and he leads 17th ranked rushing attack that puts up 220.5 YPG. Charbonnet has made four trips to the end zone and he has 8 grabs that adds another 87 yards to his ledger.
What the relatively weak non-conference schedule did for Chip Kelly was give his backup QB some looks when games were put away late. Ethan Garbers has added a pair of TD passes to the mix and Colson Yankoff is making the most of his opportunities catching the ball with 2 scores from only 3 receptions.
