Notre Dame will be looking to bounce back from a tough loss against the Bulldogs in Athens last Saturday night. Say what you will about the Irish failing when it counts, but the boys gave it one heck of a shot. They will come into this week’s game as an 11 point favorite at home.
Virginia Cavaliers
After going into the locker room down 17-7 last week at halftime, the Virginia Cavaliers toughened up in the second half for a 28-17 win against the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Virginia had only 14 first downs in the game, converting on just one of 11 third-down opportunities. They were able to move the chains on one of two fourth-down tries.
The Cavaliers moved the ball for 244 total yards in the game. They completed 15 of 24 passing attempts for 175 yards. Virginia struggled when it came to running the ball, picking up just 69 yards on the ground. The lack of ability to move the ball on the ground cost them the battle for time of possession 35:16 to just 24:44. They still had the ball enough to get the win.
The Virginia defense looked strong last week, for the most part, giving up just 270 total yards to Old Dominion. The Monarchs had 206 passing yards after completing 16-26 attempts but were only able to gain 1.5 yards per carry for 64 rushing yards.
Quarterback Bryce Perkins connected on 15-24 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 35 yards and a score on 14 carries. Joe Reed was the leading receiver with 40 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. I’m just going to be honest here.

I don’t think any of these numbers will be enough against the Notre Dame defense that just did a number to the Bulldog offense.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Ok, here we go. For the record, I’m a die-hard Dawg fan who covers Notre Dame football for a popular Chicago website and lives an hour from Notre Dame Stadium. Notre Dame’s defense is for real this year, regardless of what their record is.
After leading 10-7 at the half, Notre Dame lost a heartbreaker 23-17 at Georgia. They moved the ball for 321 total yards in the game, 275 of which came through the air. They struggled running the ball against a very mean Georgia defense for just 46 rushing yards.
The Irish defense gave up 339 total yards in the game, which was impressive when you consider who they were playing. The Bulldogs completed 20 0f 26 passes for 187 passing yards while being held to just 152 on the ground. In case you don’t know, holding the Georgia offense to 152 rushing yards is a huge achievement.
Ian Book threw the ball for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed two passes to Georgia defenders. He added 19 rushing yards on three carries. Tony Jones Jr. was the leading Notre Dame rusher with 21 yards on nine carries. Cole Kmet had 108 receiving yards and a score on nine receptions. Chase Claypool added 66 yards and a touchdown with six receptions in the game.
The Fighting Irish have averaged 39.3 points per game while only giving up 18. They average 300.7 passing yards and 144.3 rushing every week. On defense, Notre Dame gives up 157.3 yards through the air and 204.3 on the ground. It’s safe to say they’ll be much harder to beat than Old Dominion.

Free Week 5 NCAA Football Pick
I like Notre Dame covering the 11 points at home. If they have any chance of still making the College Football Playoffs, they have to put up huge numbers against everyone they play.

I think that starts this Saturday. Virginia is currently ranked 18th in the country and this will be a great bounce-back opportunity at home for the Irish.
