Yellow Jackets vs. Cardinal Gameday
Georgia Tech makes its first road trip of the season Saturday night to face Stanford at Stanford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 10:30 PM ET on ESPN, with the Yellow Jackets opening ACC play.
Tech enters 1-2 after dropping home games to Colorado and No. 18 Tennessee before beating Mercer 44-11. The Jackets scored on seven of eight possessions during one stretch and didn’t allow an offensive touchdown.
Now they fly 2,457 miles west.
Georgia Tech waited three games for its first road trip, then apparently decided California would do nicely.
Stanford is also 1-2 but already 0-2 in the ACC. The Cardinal opened with a win over Hawai’i before losing conference games to Miami and Duke, including last week’s 35-7 defeat in Durham.
Saturday is the first conference meeting between these programs.

Cardinal Stats
Stanford has scored 50 points through three games, with 36 of them coming in the opener against Hawai’i. The Cardinal have managed only seven points in each of their first two ACC games.
Davis Warren has been careful with the football.
The Stanford quarterback has thrown for 675 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. His streak has reached 107 consecutive attempts without a pick, although Duke held him to 151 yards on 18-of-32 passing last week.
Micah Ford remains the most productive option on the ground.
Ford has rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns through three games. He gained 76 yards on only 11 carries against Duke, but Stanford finished with just 86 rushing yards as a team.
The defense has created some opportunities despite allowing 107 points.
Stanford is plus-two in turnover margin and hasn’t lost the turnover battle in any game. The Cardinal have two interceptions and a fumble recovery, so Georgia Tech can’t afford to turn its first road game into a short-field contest.
Yellow Jackets Stats
Georgia Tech has scored 81 points through three games while averaging 365 yards of offense. The Jackets finally converted more of that production into points against Mercer after scoring 37 combined against Colorado and Tennessee.
Mendoza has thrown for 707 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.
The Indiana transfer was sharp against Mercer, completing 22 of 28 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns. He spread the ball around and helped Tech turn a 7-3 game into a comfortable afternoon.
Georgia Tech finally got the offense moving downhill against Mercer; California is a slightly longer commute and a different assignment.
Justice Haynes gives the Jackets their most dependable option on the ground. He has rushed for 286 yards and three touchdowns, including 148 yards and two rushing scores last week.
Haynes has also become useful in the passing game.
He caught five passes for 19 yards and another touchdown against Mercer, giving him three total scores on the afternoon. Dalen Penson, Jordan Allen and Kevin Roche Jr. have given Mendoza multiple options rather than forcing the passing game through one receiver.
The defense delivered its best performance of the season last week.
Tech held Mercer without an offensive touchdown and limited the Bears to 213 total yards. That was a welcome change after Tennessee scored 45 the previous Saturday.
Yellow Jackets vs. Cardinal QB Matchup
Davis Warren has taken care of the football through Stanford’s first three games. He’s attempted 107 passes for 675 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception.
The efficiency hasn’t translated into enough points.
Stanford has scored only 14 total in two ACC games, and Warren averaged just 4.7 yards per attempt at Duke. His 5-yard touchdown pass to Caden High accounted for the Cardinal’s only points.

Mendoza also gets more help from the running game.
Haynes gives Tech a legitimate threat beside him, which should keep Stanford from treating every obvious passing situation like a chance to attack the quarterback. The Jackets don’t need Mendoza forcing throws if the ground game is working.
Warren has been safer with the football.
Mendoza has been better at turning possessions into points.

Protecting the football is nice; eventually Stanford still has to do something interesting with it.
Georgia Tech should have the better offense, but this is its first road game and a 2,457-mile trip west. I don’t need the Jackets playing fast if they’re controlling the game with Justice Haynes and keeping Stanford’s offense on the sideline.
Give me another limited Cardinal scoring night and enough methodical football from Tech to keep 48.5 in play.
