Golden Gophers vs. Huskies Gameday
Minnesota makes its first road trip of the season Saturday night to face Washington at Husky Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:00 PM ET on FOX, with both teams opening Big Ten play.
The Gophers enter 2-1 after beating Eastern Illinois and Akron around a 38-13 loss to Mississippi State. Minnesota bounced back nicely last week, putting away Akron 41-7 behind three touchdown passes from Drake Lindsey.
Now comes a rather different Saturday night.
Minnesota waited until Week 4 to leave home, then drew Seattle at 8:00 PM local time. Very thoughtful scheduling.
Washington is 3-0 after beating Washington State 24-10, Utah State 16-14 and Eastern Washington 48-16. The Huskies have played all three games at home and won’t leave Seattle until next week’s trip to USC.
Saturday is Washington’s fourth straight at Husky Stadium.

The Huskies finally unleashed the passing game last Saturday.
Washington piled up 546 yards against Eastern Washington, including 398 through the air. Demond Williams Jr. accounted for 373 of those passing yards and four touchdowns as UW scored on four of its first five possessions.

Huskies Stats
Washington has scored 88 points through three games while allowing only 40. The Huskies needed some patience offensively in their first two wins before everything opened up against Eastern Washington.
Williams has thrown for 890 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.
He was outstanding last week, completing 27 of 33 passes for 373 yards and four scores. Washington finished with 546 total yards and averaged 8.8 yards per play, easily its best offensive performance of the season.
Dezmen Roebuck has become Williams’ most productive target.
Roebuck has 23 catches for 221 yards after posting career highs of nine receptions and 121 yards against Eastern Washington. Rashid Williams added 86 yards and two touchdowns last week, giving UW another dangerous option outside.
The defense has helped create short fields.
Washington has forced seven turnovers through three games, including five interceptions. The Huskies have also produced eight sacks while allowing only 13.3 points per game.
Golden Gophers Stats
Minnesota has scored 113 points through three games, although the Gophers’ two victories account for 100 of them. Mississippi State provided the considerably less enjoyable afternoon in between.
Lindsey has thrown for 747 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
That first interception came against Akron and ended a school-record streak of 232 consecutive attempts without a pick. Lindsey still responded with three touchdown passes as Minnesota turned a 14-7 halftime lead into a 41-7 win.
Minnesota scored 27 unanswered after halftime last week; doing that at Husky Stadium would qualify as a slightly bigger trick.
The running game remains the bigger question.
TJ Thomas currently leads Minnesota with 173 rushing yards, while the Gophers are averaging only 121.3 yards on the ground. Darius Taylor missed the Akron game, so his availability remains worth watching before kickoff.
Javon Tracy has been Lindsey’s most productive receiver with 240 yards.
Minnesota’s defense has allowed 52 points, but 38 came against Mississippi State. The Gophers responded by holding Akron to seven points and only 229 total yards last week, which was much closer to the defensive performance P.J. Fleck wanted.

He pushed the ball downfield, spread it among several targets and helped Washington score touchdowns on four of its first five possessions. After two relatively conservative offensive games, the Huskies finally showed what this passing attack can look like when Williams gets rolling.
Drake Lindsey has been productive in his own right.
Minnesota’s junior has completed 67 of 103 passes for 747 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. He’s coming off a three-touchdown game against Akron and has already thrown for at least 200 yards in every game this season.

Lindsey will need more help from Minnesota’s ground game in Seattle.
Washington can make life considerably harder if the Gophers become one-dimensional, especially with a defense that has already forced seven turnovers. Minnesota can’t afford to spend Saturday night chasing Williams while asking Lindsey to answer every possession.
Williams brings the bigger-play ceiling.
Lindsey brings enough experience to keep this from becoming comfortable early.
Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Washington Huskies bottom line: Lindsey gives Minnesota a capable answer at quarterback, but Washington’s explosive passing game, turnover production and fourth straight home game give the Huskies several ways to make the Gophers’ first road trip a long night.

The Gophers can make this uncomfortable if Drake Lindsey protects the football and keeps Washington from getting extra possessions. But Minnesota’s running game hasn’t given him enough help, especially with Darius Taylor’s availability still a concern.
Washington has spent the entire month at Husky Stadium, and Williams gives the Huskies the more explosive offense. I’ll lay the 10 and trust UW to eventually pull away.
