The North Carolina Tar Heels will welcome the Virginia Cavaliers to town this weekend for another rendition of the South’s Oldest Rivalry. Both ACC schools are coming off of blowout victories last Saturday.
HISTORY: While UVA may have Virginia Tech, and Duke may have UNC, these two programs have in every season since 1892, carrying the second-longest rivalry in college football. UNC leads the all-time series 63-58-4, but UVA has taken the last four meetings, including a 44-41 shootout in Charlottesville last season.
Virginia Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers are off to a good start this season. The Cavs are entering this heated matchup on the heels of two big home wins over William & Mary and Illinois. Last weekend they jumped out to a big 21-7 halftime lead against the Fighting Illini, and didn’t look back, picking up the 42-14 win and covering the spread along the way.
Brennan Armstrong has taken things to the next level in his second year starting. He tossed for 339 passing yards and scored four total touchdowns (2 pass, 2 rush) in the season opening win over W&M, but his performance last week was elite. Armstrong went 27-36 for 405 yards and five touchdowns.
UVA hasn’t leaned on the run game much in two weeks, as the Air Raid has been very successful so far. Wayne Taulapapa leads the team with 15 carries for 83 yards, and he caught a touchdown last weekend. Swiss army knife Keytaon Thompson continues to expand his role, and he’s got 67 rushing yards on eight carries, and ten catches for 134 receiving yards.
Four different pass catchers scored in the win over Illinois. Dontayvion Wicks scored twice, and he leads the team with 163 yards on seven catches. Slot man Billy Kemp IV has ten catches for 110 yards, and he scored last weekend himself. Ok State transfer Jelani Woods had a breakout game last Saturday, catching five passes for 122 yards and a score.
After blanking W&M in the opener, the Wahoos forced a pair of turnovers and sacked Illinois QB Artur Sitkowski three times last weekend.
North Carolina Tar Heels
The North Carolina Tar Heels figured things out after a rocky Week 1 showing in Blacksburg. UNC was a victim of Lane Stadium’s return to full capacity, and they responded to the Virginia Tech loss with a blowout victory over Georgia State behind a Heisman effort from Sam Howell.
Howell’s season debut was rough against Tech (17/32, 208, 1:3), but he responded abruptly with a five-touchdown performance of his own. He torched Georgia State for 352 passing yards and three touchdowns, and he added 104 yards on the ground and two more scores.
Ty Chandler is doing his best to replace to voids at running back left by Javonte Williams and Michael Carter. The Tennessee transfer has rushed for 124 yards on 25 carries, and a touchdown through two games.
Josh Downs had a big game against Tech, and he followed it up with a solid performance last week. He leads the team with 17 catches and 205 receiving yards. Senior wideout Antoine Green three catches for 117 yards and a touchdown against GSU, while fellow senior Emery Simmons caught three passes for 73 yards and a score.
Despite losing to Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels did outgain them and forced a pair of turnovers. They also held GSU to under 100 yards passing.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
Can UVA make it five straight and hand UNC their second defeat to their bordering state this month? The South’s Oldest Rivalry could steal the show and deliver the game of the weekend with the talent on both sides. Points will be scored, but who wins?
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Over 66.5
The quarterback battle will likely determine the outcome of this game. After watching Sam Howell’s performance last week, betting against the Tar Heels at home would be tough, but Brennan Armstrong shouldn’t be overlooked in comparison. He’s taken this Air Raid offense to new heights, and UVA looks like they can score with anyone this season.
The over will be appealing here with two explosive offenses, and it may just be the route to go here. There are options, as spotting UVA eight points here wouldn’t be a bad idea here. Both teams are impressive, and we’ll trust the QBs in this one. Take the over.
