Week 5 college football sees the Cavaliers and Hurricanes meet at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Virginia Cavaliers are already facing the possibility of an 0 – 3 beginning to conference play after losses to Wake and UNC the last 2 weekends. Despite having the #1 passing offense in the land that puts up over 430 ypg, it has not been enough to propel the Cavs to wins.
Primarily a result of poor defense, the Cavs were unable to stop Wake Forest from scoring points on their first 7 possessions of last wekend’s 37 – 17 loss.
The Miami Hurricanes are opening ACC play this weekend and only managed a 2 – 2 record through non-conference outings. Coach Diaz was put in the spotlight this week by not only the fans but Gameday’s Kirk Herbstreit as well. Is he the guy who will help elevate the Canes back to prosperity or is his time here running out?
Games like these put that much more emphasis on wins when conference play puts pressure on every program. Should the canes be favored by 4 points with a questionable D’Eriq King again? Let’s talk football!
The Hurricanes are favored by 4 points in this ACC matchup.
Virginia Cavaliers
The Cavs feel just as much pressure to win as the Hurricanes feel, and ACC games certainly ramp up the adrenalin. Losing 2 straight ACC games and a 2-game losing skid has everyone concerned and the line setters are expecting another loss this weekend.
The Virginia passing offense has been stellar which is obvious when you see the little #1 next to their ranking in passing yards. Remember Dan Fouts and the Chargers? No? Well, it almost feels like we are seeing the same ideal because you can score and score but if your defense is shit it will never matter.
Wake Forest scored points on 7 of their first 7 possessions and Brennan Armstrong threw 59 passes with a pick for the Cavs.
Armstrong didn’t get much run support but they were playing from behind basically from the get-go.
In all, the Cavs tallied only 99 rushing yards last weekend although Armstrong threw for 409 and 2 scores. Armstrong led the team with 17 carries too, so he tried to be Mr. Everything and just didn’t have enough support around him. He did complete passes to 8 different receivers and Dontayvion Wicks led the way with 114 yards and a score from 8 grabs.
Wicks is second on the team with 22 receptions for the season but he does lead the team with 460 yards and 4 trips to paydirt. Billy Kemp IV has 25 grabs and has brought in 281 for 3 scores.
The rushing stats are all odd to me, being that the 4 QBs sit in the top 8 players in yards and attempts. The offensive live has allowed 10 sacks and the air attack is somehow the best in NCAA. This looks more like a team that will try to run the ball more often than throw the ball, and I think being behind has led to them being forced into passing circumstances. That is not how they plan on getting things done, however, so this stat will change as the season goes on. This is simply NOT the best passing team in college football according to the eye test and the real ability of this offense.
Miami Hurricanes
Another week without D’Eriq King calling the shots will have Manny Diaz likely using both of his QBs again as he did last weekend. Now, let’s make no mistake that a 69 – 0 win over Central Connecticut… which oh, by the way, they have an amazing amphitheater and I saw YES in concert on their campus back in 2000, anyway.
There is nothing but a scrimmage to take from a 69 – 0 win and it came at a good time now that King is out again. King’s absence is naturally a concern and he is expected to make it back next week from the shoulder injury.
The Miami offense sits 25th in the rankings with their passing game and 32nd in total yards as well.
We can expect plenty of Camron Harris to be coming out of the Miami backfield this weekend. He has already accumulated 51 carries for 272 yards and he has found the end zone 3 times on the ground and once through the air. Harris is one of 5 receivers to be over 100 yards, so he is showing that he can be utilized all over the field.
I think we are all not accustomed to seeing Miami ranked 92 in pass defense and 83 in points allowed at 26.3 per game. Luckily, the Virginia defense has not done much better so that gives the Canes a chance to get their ground game going.
Charleston Rambo is the main wideout for the Canes, as he has brought in 26 balls for 288 yards and a pair of scores. Rambo did most of his damage against Michigan State, however, since he caught 12 balls for those 2 scores with 156 yards and he has been rather pedestrian in the other 3 appearances with no more than 52 yards in any of those outings.

Free Week 5 NCAA Football Pick
I don’t think Miami should be favored at all in this spot, not that Virginia is all that and a bag of chips either. I just see this as a 3-point game either way, so the line setters have left us some room on the Cavs. They might just win this thing outright, but I like points in my pocket.
