Villanova travels to L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium on Friday night for its Week 2 matchup against No. 24 Louisville. The Wildcats enter at 1-1 after splitting their first two Patriot League games, while the Cardinals are 0-1 following a 41-38 loss to No. 9 Ole Miss. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET.
Villanova opened its season with a wild 35-32 loss to William & Mary before responding with a 17-16 road victory over Bucknell. The Wildcats are ranked No. 17 in the FCS Coaches Poll and are playing their second straight road game.
Villanova has already played two one-score games before making its jump into ACC competition.
Louisville remained No. 24 in the AP Top 25 despite losing its opener in Nashville. The Cardinals rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final six minutes to tie Ole Miss before Lucas Carneiro hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired.
Friday will be Louisville’s home opener after beginning the season at a neutral site. Villanova faces a major step up in competition, but the Wildcats arrive with a victory already under their belt.

Louisville enters as a massive home favorite, with the Cardinals laying 36.5 points. Villanova is getting +36.5 on the road, while the total is sitting at 56.5. The moneyline also makes it clear how large the talent gap is expected to be.
The Wildcats have already shown two very different ways to play a close game.
Villanova led William & Mary by 10 points with less than a minute remaining before losing 35-32 on a field goal as time expired. One week later, the Wildcats survived Bucknell 17-16 after Dominic LeBlanc kicked the go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter.
Louisville’s only game was considerably more explosive. The Cardinals scored 28 second-half points against Ole Miss and erased a 38-24 deficit before losing on the final play.

Louisville showed plenty offensively despite coming away empty-handed against Ole Miss. The Cardinals finished with 498 total yards, including 307 through the air and 191 on the ground. They also averaged 7.2 yards per play against a top-10 opponent.
Lincoln Kienholz settled in after a slow first half.
The Ohio State transfer completed 17 of 29 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns in his first Louisville start. He was particularly dangerous after halftime, throwing for 261 yards and both of his touchdowns while helping the Cardinals erase a two-score deficit.
Tre Richardson supplied the biggest plays in the passing game.
Richardson caught four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Jaleel Skinner added 78 yards on four receptions. Keyjuan Brown led Louisville with 56 rushing yards, and Kienholz also used his legs for a late seven-yard touchdown that tied the game.
Defensively, Louisville forced two turnovers but surrendered 475 total yards and several explosive plays. The Cardinals will expect a much cleaner performance in their home opener against an FCS offense that hasn’t topped 32 points through two games.

Wildcats Stats
Villanova enters Louisville at 1-1 after surviving a difficult trip to Bucknell. The Wildcats finished with 305 total yards in the 17-16 victory, including 218 through the air. They were held to 87 rushing yards after producing 157 in their opener.
Pat McQuaide has handled the quarterback job in both games.
Against Bucknell, McQuaide completed 13 of 20 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Both scores went to Braden Reed, who finished with five catches for 68 yards. Brandon Binkowski led Villanova with 71 receiving yards.
Ja’briel Mace carried most of the rushing load.
Mace gained 70 yards on 13 carries, while Isaiah Ragland added 42 yards. Villanova led 14-0 at halftime before its offense stalled badly in the third quarter, gaining only one total yard and allowing Bucknell to climb back into the game.
The Wildcats made the plays they needed late. Their defense helped preserve the one-point victory, and McQuaide found Ragland for 21 yards on third down to finally run out the clock. That kind of composure will be tested at a completely different level Friday night.

Wildcats vs. Cardinals QB Matchup
Lincoln Kienholz gets his first start at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium after nearly pulling off a comeback against Ole Miss. His Louisville debut wasn’t perfect, but his second-half response showed why the Cardinals were comfortable turning the offense over to him.
Kienholz can attack vertically and add another dimension with his legs.
Louisville didn’t need huge passing volume early against Ole Miss, but Kienholz became far more aggressive once the Cardinals fell behind. That ability to create chunk plays should give Villanova’s secondary a much different challenge than it saw during the first two weeks.
Pat McQuaide gives Villanova considerably more experience than the original matchup information suggested.
The graduate quarterback has started both games this season and surpassed 8,000 career passing yards during the Bucknell victory. His job in Louisville will be less about matching Kienholz statistically and more about avoiding the turnovers that hurt Villanova in its opening loss.
McQuaide’s experience gives the Wildcats a chance to sustain possessions and keep their defense off the field. Kienholz has the much stronger supporting cast and the more explosive offense, leaving Louisville with the clear quarterback matchup advantage despite his limited experience as the Cardinals’ starter.

The Cardinals lost their opener, but that 41-38 battle with Ole Miss showed enough offense for me to expect a much easier night against an FCS opponent.
Villanova is 1-1, not winless, after grinding out a 17-16 road win at Bucknell. Still, they managed only 305 yards in that game and went scoreless in the third quarter. Louisville can turn those empty stretches into separation quickly.
This is a big number, so I need the Cardinals to keep scoring.
Louisville has the firepower to create a margin Villanova may struggle to chase.
Lincoln Kienholz threw for 307 yards against Ole Miss and looked much better as the game progressed. Now he gets his first home start against a defense stepping up in class, and that matchup should produce more clean scoring chances.
Villanova quarterback Pat McQuaide is experienced enough to keep this from becoming completely one-sided early. The problem is Louisville doesn’t need a shutout to cover if its offense gets into the 40s or 50s.
I see the Cardinals pulling away after Villanova hangs around for a while. A couple of second-half turnovers or short fields could crack this open.
I’ll lay the big number with Louisville -36.5.
