Trailblazers Cougars Free Pick: BYU -48.5
Here is my Trailblazers Cougars free pick: Utah Tech couldn’t have drawn up a much worse start to 2026. Now the Trailblazers have to visit No. 14 BYU, and I’m laying the monster number.
Utah Tech was demolished 54-0 by Montana State in its opener, producing only 227 total yards and 12 first downs. The Trailblazers also turned it over twice and went 0-for-3 on fourth down.
BYU comes in fresh after a 12-2 season that included a perfect 6-0 record at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars opened last season by crushing Portland State 69-0, so they’ve shown no problem putting away an overmatched FCS opponent.
After watching Utah Tech get blanked by 54 points at home, asking BYU to create similar separation in Provo doesn’t feel unreasonable.
More importantly, Utah Tech went just 2-10 last season and was outscored 352-192. That’s a rough profile before stepping up to face a ranked Big 12 team.
This spread is ridiculous. So is the mismatch.
However, laying 48.5 means BYU can’t afford to coast for long after building a comfortable lead. I’m willing to accept that risk because Utah Tech just failed to score against an FCS opponent while allowing 447 yards.
Give me the home favorite. I’m laying BYU -48.5 against a Trailblazers team facing another brutal assignment.
