Week 6 college football sees the Roadrunners and Hilltoppers meet at L.T Smith Stadium.
So, the 5 – 0 Roadrunners are underdogs to a Western Kentucky team with one win, you say? Things that make ya go hmm, right?
Well, naturally the schedule for both teams is worth noticing as the Hilltoppers have losses to Michigan State, Army, and Indiana so it hasn’t exactly been cupcake city. Navigating a tough schedule is what Coach Helton hopes makes this team stronger no matter the results, although wins and losses are the end-all goals.
The Roadrunners did open their 2021 campaign with a win against the Illini out of the Big Ten so they too have been tested a little. Jeff Traylor’s second season in San Antonio has gotten off to an outstanding start after a 7 – 5 2020 season under his belt.
UTSA lost 45 – 7 in their only other appearance in Bowling Green that came in their first season in Conference USA back in 2014. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers are 10 – 1 and 9 – 2 ATS at home against West Division opponents and need big win to get back on track.
The Hilltoppers are favored by 3.5 points in this Conference USA matchup.
UTSA Roadrunners
In 2012, the Roadrunners got to 5 – 0 and they have not done it again until now. So, the start to the season is fantastic but shit is about to get real here quickly! UTSA is a dog this weekend, and that has to send Jeff Traylor into concern because he has a team that is undefeated.
Outside of the Illini win we can certainly question the strength of schedule for this Roadrunner program, but hey, win what is in front you because that is all you can control. As nice as it is, the UTSA defense has been great against the run but they have struggled against the passing game. That doesn’t bode week with the #1 passing team in the nation across the field as it will be this weekend.
Here is your next concern… There are only three players on the injury report for UTSA.
Their leading WR Zakhari Franklin is one of them and RB Brenden Brady is questionable as well. Brady is second on this roster with 37 carries and 140 yards and who takes his place could be a list of players. Sincere McCormick better stay on this field and be a major contributor to the ground game or else this could be a long road trip for UTSA.
WKU Hilltoppers
No one planned a 1 – 3 start to the season, but as I said above the schedule that the Hilltoppers took on for non-conference play was nothing soft and cuddly. Now, the important part of the season gets underway because this program is 0 – 0 and has everything to gain going forward. When you are 1 – 3 and yet favored to win? That tells you that the line setters are aware of how good this team actually is and their QB has been seen airing out passes all season.
Bailey Zappe already has 1.712 passing yards and 16 TD strikes to a receiving staff that has seen 15 different pass-catchers. Oh, btw, 8 of those dudes have seen the end zone and Mr. Jerreth Sterns is a beast! Sterns has 40 receptions and he has been seen in the end zone 5 times celebrating with his teammates while gaining 546 yards this year.
I don’t have enough time in the day to list all of the guys that Zappe will find this weekend, so expect the ball to be in the air early and often against UTSA this weekend with a must-win situation at hand.
In all honesty, I think Coach Helton only runs the ball to keep the defense honest, because this passing game is so clearly the point of controlling how each game will play out. Noah Whittington leads the team with 111 rush yards while 5 different receivers are over or near 150 yards on the year.
How do we know this passing offense is pretty good? Oh, you see the little #1 by their offensive passing ranking? Hmm hmm, this is the best passing team in all the land, people, and it puts up 441.5 yards a game and averages 39 points an affair!
