Week 12 college football sees the Blazers and Roadrunners meet at the Alamodome.
The Roadrunners are favored by 4.5 points in this Conference USA matchup and this game will decide which of the two programs lands in the title game representing the West Division.
Everything that UTSA has done to reach the 10 – 0 mark can all be for naught should they get upset by a game UAB Blazers squad on Saturday at the Alamodome.
The Roadrunners’ perfect season comes down to this game and we all saw it coming a few weeks ago. I know this because I have been previewing both of these teams’ games all throughout the campaign and these two were on a collision course for this game.
UTSA is currently atop the standings with an unblemished 6 – 0 conference record but the Blazers are only a game behind at 5 – 1. That makes the winner of this game almost assured to end up in the Conference USA Championship game in two weeks. Of course, plenty can happen on the final day of the regular season next weekend and it usually does so we will see how it all plays out.
UAB Blazers
If experience in this situations matter then the Blazers must feel pretty good being where they are at coming into this weekend. UAB has navigated their way to the last 3 Conference USA title games and you know Coach Clark wants to make it 4 straight appearances for his program.
Talk about overcoming obstacles, I mean we are talking about a football program that didn’t exist just 5 years ago. Since coming back to FBS in 2017, winning has been the way at Birmingham and they should be making their 5th consecutive bowl appearance this season too.
Remember now, UAB took out Marshall to win last year’s Conference USA title game so they were earmarked for another post-season appearance. We all know that Covid took away a chunk of Bowls and UAB simply had nowhere to play with all of the cancelations.
The Blazers have won 4 of their last 5 games to get themselves in this position and the defense has just been a major contributor to this team’s success in 2021. This UAB D ranks 15th in total yards allowed and 16th against the opposing running game.
That defense showed up again last weekend to secure the 21 – 14 win over Marshall and the last drive of the game for the Herd ended with a Blazers INT. What a finish it was too as it was 14 – 14 down to the final minute before the Blazers Dylan Hopkins found paydirt with only 36 seconds left to play.
UTSA Roadrunners
When the Roadrunners ended 2020 7 – 5 with a bowl loss to Louisana, no one knew we would be seeing a 10 – 0 UTSA team in 2020. If you did make that call? Holy shit dude, go pick some numbers and bang out lotto or mega-millions!
Right? So, it all really comes down to this because I see UAB and UTSA winning their final games next weekend regardless of this result.
The Roadrunners can make a huge statement this weekend at home and where better to finish the job than in front of your own fans on Senior Night at the Alamodome?
I do believe that this team was looking ahead to this game the way they played last weekend against Southern Miss. Had it not been for one helluva defensive stand late in the game, we might be talking about a 9 – 1 UTSA program this weekend and not the 10 – 0 one we see now.
In a tie game at 17 with only 6 minutes to play, Southern Miss was driving to take a lead and change the history of the UTSA season. Nose tackle Jaylon Haynes came up with the fumble recovery of his life and the Roadrunners scored the final 10 points of the game.
Lucky? Hey, when you are favored by 33 points and you barely escape with a W? Yeah, you are able to use a little luck when it comes in handy.
Frank Harris didn’t look comfortable in the pocket all day as he ended the game 17 for 30 with a pair of picks and 227 passing yards.
This UTSA defense is just as tolerant as the Blazers are so this might be one slugfest with not a lot of scoring coming again. The Roadrunners are ranked 6th in the nation against the run and the 19 PPG allowed puts them at 15th in the country.
