Week 3 college football sees the Blazers and Mean Green meet at Apogee Stadium.
The Blazers and Mean Green have both split their first two games of the 2021 season and the schedule has brought these two Conference USA programs together for a West Division showdown in Denton, TX on Saturday.
These two teams did not meet in 2020 after 3 consecutive years of playing each other within the West Division of Conference USA. The Blazers are 3 – 1 in the 4 all-time meetings between the programs dating back to 2014.
Since the Mean Green joined the conference, they are 1 – 6 ATS in their first home game against conference foes. Meanwhile, UAB has lost 3 of their last 4 conference road-openers so something will have to give to reverse the trends for both head coaches.
Coaches Littrell and Clark are each in their 6th season with their respective programs, and Bill Clark has had UAB with a winning record since the program’s re-entry to FBS in 2017.
The Blazers are favored by -12.5 in this Conference USA West Division matchup.
UAB Blazers
Coach Bill Clark is certainly among the better coaches in this conference and arguably around the landscape of college football. When this program went poof after the 2014 campaign UAB did not return to Division 1 football until 2017 and Clark was there through it all. It is not easy to watch your program work so hard to be told that we can no longer support you but the Blazers fought their way back and are now always in the conversation towards a conference title game.
The Blazers have played in the last 3 of those games, in fact, so a loss to mighty GEORGIA last weekend might not be the worst of the world. I mean, all right, it was 56 – 7 and no one walked out of Athens with their head very high after that loss, but it is the SEC!
No one wants to be told that it was ok because you were unfavoured to lose by 24 points and then got crushed against a team looking to contend for a national title. It is what it is and the Blazers simply have to get back to conference play and worry about what is in front of them. Everyone is 0 – 0 basically, and Coach Clark will have the boys ready to rebound, make no mistake. The line setters obviously expect it slapping the Blazers as nearly 2 TD favs this weekend in Denton.
Tyler Johnston has obviously seen it all and has the ability to let things go so he should be ready to lead by example on Saturday. Johnston was a freshman in 2018 and is still listed as a junior in 2021 so he has been and will be with this team for what will feel like about 9 years when he leaves the program.
The running game is still a work in progress so that needs to be cleaned up since Johnston really doesn’t scramble much on his own. They don’t run plays for Johnston to tuck in the ball, so the back situation better get sorted out quickly.
North Texas Mean Green
Mean Green Head Coach Seth Littrell has two winning seasons out of 5 with the program, but the last two have only resulted in 4-win campaigns. This team still got a bowl bid last year at 4 – 5 but they got walloped 56 – 28 by the App State Mountaineers down in Myrtle Beach.
Oscar Adaway tore that damn ACL and he was headed for the starting RB role for the Mean Green in 2021. So, the stats so far through 2 games are obviously skewed a bit being that Northwestern State made it to Denton for opening weekend. SMU gave North Texas a little more realization of what is happening last weekend in the 35 – 12 outing that left the Mean Green 1 – 1 coming into Saturday’s West Division opener at home.
Jace Ruder obviously needs to work on the 2 / 4 TD to INT ratio going forward and he really doesn’t stretch the defense averaging 6 yards per attempt. Suffice to say that most DCs in the land will pick up on that crap real quick and David Reeves knows a thing or two about defense for UAB. a game plan that included stretching out the patterns wi be vital to keep the UAB defense out of the Mean Green end zone with pick-6s and INTs.
Luckily, he has DeAndre Torrey who can tote the rock and help support the offense moving the chains with hard runs inside and out. Torrey has already scored 3 times on 41 carries with 315 yards to his credit through the first 2 games of the 2021 campaign.
Ruder has obviously spent time working with WR Roderic Burns, as the two have already combined 18 times for 255 of those passing yards for the offense.
