Week 11 college football sees the Blazers and Thundering Herd meet at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The Herd is favored by 4.5 points in this Conference USA matchup and it might just end up being the first of two meetings this season if things go right. Marshall and UAB could potentially meet in the Conference USA title game but there is still plenty of football left to play.
The Herd currently sits atop the East Division standings tied with Western Kentucky at 4 – 1 but Marshall will meet the Hilltoppers on the final day of the regular season. That tilt might ultimately be what decides which program makes the appearance in the title game but this is certainly one of the most important games of the season.
A loss for either of these teams could throw a huge wrench in the standings even though they are not even in the same division.
The Blazers have reached the conference title game the last 3 seasons so they will fight like hell to ensure they end up there again in 2021. Both programs have already clinched bowl eligibility but that was just the first step of accomplishments in the big scheme of things.
UAB Blazers
Blazers Head Coach Bill Clark knows how to motivate his kids to win games which is obvious when you make three straight Conference USA Championship Game appearances. These final 3 games will all be tough to win with UTSA and UTEP on deck after this tilt against the Conference USA East Division leaders.
A rematch from the 2020 Conference USA title game might happen but this heads-up affair is crucial for UAB as much as the UTSA game will be next weekend. UTSA is perfect this year and they are 1 game ahead of UAB in the standings.
The Blazers put up a season-high 52 points last weekend against LA Tech which comes at a perfect time with two huge road tests coming up these next 2 weekends. UTSA is favored by 33 points this weekend over Southern Miss, so UAB is certainly expecting to see a perfect 10 – 0 Roadrunners team in the Alamodome next weekend.
There is no room to look ahead, however, because a loss to Marshall this weekend could make the quest for a 4th straight conference title appearance that much harder to accomplish.
Dylan Hopkins has inherited the starter’s role at QB but he has certainly earned it and the team feels more confident with him calling the plays. It’s not like he adds a big dimension with his legs but he simply doesn’t throw the ball to the wrong team very often. His 11 – 4 TD to INT ratio is fair and he has indeed found the end zone 3 times on the ground.
UAB ranks 91st in passing yards this season so the air attack could certainly be improved but the UAB defense will keep them in any game.
Marshall Thundering Herd
The Herd and Blazers both know how important this game is even though they are not in the same division. Marshall, to me, seems to have their shit together on both sides of the ball and that is certainly why the line setters are expecting a home win here.
The home team is indeed 6 – 3 in their last 9 meetings and the Herd is riding a 4-game win streak into this weekend. While UAB might be looking ahead to UTSA next weekend, the Herd also sees Western Kentucky as the big game left to play this season.
That in no way, shape, or form, means that the Herd isn’t looking for revenge from last year’s conference title game loss to the Blazers a year ago… in Marshall no less!
The Herd has held 5 teams to 13 points or less this season and that is why you see them ranked 9th against the pass and 19th in points allowed this year.
Marshall has been a 1st quarter beast all year until last weekend when FAU got up 10 – 7 in the opening frame. Marshall had outscored their opponents 73 – 3 through week 8 and they have used that edge to stay ahead of the game. So, the Herd simply shut out FAU completely in the second half instead and chewed up the Owls for a 28 – 13 win.
Grant Wells was spectacular in the win tossing the rock for 351 yards completing 26 of his 38 passing attempts despite only having 1 TD pass to 1 INT. He and Willie Johnson connected for 140 of those yards and the strike to the end zone.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

4* Free Week 11 NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
This line was -6 and now we see it down to -4.5. Why? Oh come on now, you know why, right? A close game between these two programs is imminent and this is a field goal game waiting to happen. Whoever has the ball last kicks the final FG and that will be all it comes down to.
After 59 minutes and a change of outstanding football, one of these kickers will ultimately decide who takes this W. I think it will be Matty Quinn to provide the upset as UAB walks off the field in victory!
