Week 2 college football sees the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and Oklahoma State Cowboys meeting at Boone Pickens Stadium.
We have another in-state rivalry game this weekend as Tulsa takes on Oklahoma State on Saturday in Stillwater, OK.
These two teams played similar games last weekend although the Cowboys at least got out of trouble against the Missouri State Bears. Oklahoma State escaped with a 23 – 16 win over an FCS program and certainly did not look impressive to start the 2021 campaign.
Tulsa? Oh, they lost to UC-Davis, another FCS outfit that gave an FBS team all they could handle and even more, obviously! UC-Davis, he said!
So, the line setters must have looked at this game and taken hours if not days to set these lines at 13 and 51. Why? This might be the game of the week… to miss if you have anything else worth doing on your Saturday. You know, laundry, catch up on some dusting, maybe take a nap… LoL
Let’s just say ESPN College Gameday has no plans to be in Stillwater for this battle and they might not really talk about this tilt much on the air either.
The Cowboys are favored by 13 points in this AAC vs. Big 12 matchup.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Davis Brin threw for 201 yards and only completed 15 of 28 attempts with 2 picks and not even a shot to the end zone. That vaunted UC-Davis defense, baby! You do see what the line was for that game, right? Tulsa -21.5? Losing 19 – 17 instead SU.
Let’s also keep in mind that Phil Montgomery has almost everyone back from 2020 and last year produced quite a campaign. The Golden Hurricane snapped a 3-year bowl-less drought last season and went 6 – 0 in conference play with losses to this Oklahoma State team and Cincinnati. That was it until the 28 – 26 loss to Mississippi State in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Regardless, opening the season with a loss to UC-Davis has got to take the wind out of excitement when you expect a much different start. Do you read magazines? Good, go open Phil Steele’s college football guide and see what he said about Tulsa. If you didn’t see it, here… “Tulsa is a legitimate contender to get back to the AAC title game for a second straight year.”
Hmm hmm, so that certainly helped build up some expectations for this year’s squad. Opening with a loss to an FCS team won’t destroy their confidence and obviously, it wasn’t a conference game. It still makes coaching up the guys a little tougher because they were either unprepared and looking ahead or just had no interest in playing football last weekend.
A great outing by Deneric Prince went to waste as he traveled 179 yards on 14 carries (12.8 per carry) and found the end zone on one occasion as well.
Tulsa had 120 starts on the offensive line returning, so we expected the run game to be to their advantage this year. It was, but it obviously didn’t lead to anything in the 4th quarter against UC-Davis! Again, favored by 3 damn TDs, right? Ugh, that deserves one helluva come on man!
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Mike Gundy decided that Shane Illingworth did enough to get the opening nod at starting QB last weekend against an FCS opponent. Illingworth ended the game 22 of 40 with 315 passing yards but the 1 / 1 ratio isn’t impressive at all.
Luckily, the INT he threw came at the end of the second half and it wasn’t costly but he made some poor decisions in the game that stopped some drives cold. Of even greater concern is the fact that the Cowboys mustered up only one field goal in the entire second half. It was a fumble festival for both teams as we saw the ball on the ground 5 times between them.
LD Brown led the Cowboys with, get this, 30 yards on the ground on 15 carries with a TD in the 2nd quarter. Senior WR Tay Martin had the only performance worth mentioning, as he picked up 107 yards and found the end zone once.
Again… this is the game of the week… to miss!
