Here’s why I’m backing an UNDER bet below in my Trojans Dukes free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Trojans vs. Dukes Gameday
The Troy Trojans visit the James Madison Dukes on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. This Week 9 Sun Belt matchup features Troy at 3-4 and James Madison at 7-1.
Gerad Parker’s Trojans are 0-3 on the road and have dropped two straight. Another loss would put their bowl hopes under serious pressure.
Troy needs a turnaround, and quickly.
Troy hasn’t won on the road, and Harrisonburg isn’t exactly where opponents go looking for charity.
Billy Napier has James Madison at 4-1 in conference play. The Dukes are also 4-0 at home, where they’ve made life miserable for visiting teams.
They’ll be looking to protect that record.
James Madison is coming off a 34-31 overtime loss at Appalachian State. The Dukes forced overtime with a late TD but couldn’t finish the job.
Troy lost 21-14 to ULM in its latest outing. The Trojans have struggled to finish drives, and that problem won’t get easier against a strong JMU defense.
These teams met in the 2025 Sun Belt Championship Game. James Madison won 31-14 and enters Thursday looking to maintain its recent edge in the series.
It’s Week 9, Troy Trojans vs. James Madison Dukes, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Troy Trojans vs. James Madison Dukes Odds & Previous Games
James Madison is listed at -1760 on the moneyline, with Troy at +952. The Dukes are favored by 20.5 points, while the total is 49.5.
That’s a hefty spread for a conference game.
Troy has lost four of its L5 games, including defeats to Louisiana, 33-6, and Utah State, 21-10. The Trojans did beat Southern Miss 55-34 during that stretch.
Unfortunately for Troy, that offensive explosion hasn’t become a habit.
James Madison defeated Georgia State 49-22, Georgia Southern 27-24 and Marshall 45-17 during its recent winning run. The Dukes have won four of their L5 games.
They’ve been capable of winning both close games and comfortable ones.
James Madison also beat Troy 16-14 in September 2023. The Dukes have taken the two most recent meetings, although Troy made the earlier matchup considerably tighter.
The Trojans have shown they can compete in this series. Doing it for four quarters in Harrisonburg is another matter.

Dukes Stats
James Madison has scored 331 points through eight games, averaging 41.4 PPG. The Dukes are producing 456.3 total YPG, including 249.1 through the air.
They have several ways to attack a defense.
The running game adds 207.1 YPG. That balance has made James Madison difficult to defend, particularly when opponents commit extra defenders to stopping the run.
The Dukes have allowed 146 points, an average of 18.3 PPG. They’ve also collected seven interceptions and recovered five fumbles.
Turnovers have helped them control field position.
George Pettaway leads the rushing attack with 824 yards and eight TDs. However, he’s unavailable Thursday with a lower-body injury.
His absence puts more responsibility on the remaining backs. James Madison must maintain its ground production without its leading rusher.
The Dukes still have plenty of offensive options. Troy will need to tackle well and avoid giving up explosive runs.
Trojans Stats
Troy has scored 160 points through seven games, averaging 22.9 PPG. The Trojans have gained 1,235 passing yards and 1,381 rushing yards.
Their ground attack has been the more productive unit.
Gavin Griffin leads Troy with 398 rushing yards and two TDs. Jordan Lovett has contributed another 374 yards.
The Trojans have allowed 174 points, an average of 24.9 PPG. Their defense has generally been more competitive than the overall record suggests.
They’ve had some success stopping drives.
Troy has held opponents to scores on approximately 72% of their red-zone trips. That’s an encouraging number against an offense that regularly reaches scoring position.
Donnie Smith leads the pass rush with six sacks. He gives Troy a legitimate threat to disrupt plays in the backfield.
TK Keyes leads the receiving group with 282 yards and three TDs. His questionable status adds another concern to an offense already short on dependable passing options.
Troy’s defense has shown some fight, but the offense needs to stop leaving it with all the dirty work.
The Trojans need manageable third downs and better field position. Repeated three-and-outs would put too much pressure on their defense.
Trojans vs. Dukes QB Matchup
Camden Coleman has thrown for 1,567 yards, 14 TDs and two interceptions. He’s completed 131 of 212 passes and has been the more dependable passer in this matchup.
Coleman has also contributed as a runner.
His late rushing TD forced overtime against Appalachian State. That ability to extend plays gives defenders another problem to consider.
JC Evans has provided James Madison with a productive alternative. He’s thrown for 298 yards and five TDs without an interception.
Evans connected with Braeden Wisloski for a 70-yard TD against Appalachian State. The Dukes can change QBs without abandoning their offensive approach.
Troy’s Goose Crowder has thrown for 1,162 yards, nine TDs and five interceptions. He’s completed 102 of 183 attempts.
His health is the bigger concern.
Crowder has been dealing with a shoulder injury after exiting Troy’s previous two games. He’s listed as probable, but his condition remains worth watching.
Tucker Kilcrease has completed eight of 15 passes for 73 yards and one TD. He’s the alternative if Crowder cannot finish.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!

Coleman gives James Madison a clear advantage in passing efficiency. His ability to protect possession should help the Dukes sustain drives.
Crowder needs to avoid forcing throws against a defense capable of creating turnovers. Troy cannot afford to give James Madison extra possessions.
The Dukes have greater flexibility at QB. The Trojans need a healthy Crowder and better execution to keep their offense moving.
Troy Trojans vs. James Madison Dukes bottom line: James Madison has the stronger offense and more dependable QB situation, while Troy needs its defense to keep the game manageable.

Trojans Dukes Free Pick: Under 49.5
Here is my Trojans Dukes free pick: Under 49.5. James Madison has won 23 of its L25 home games, but winning comfortably doesn’t require running up the score. Troy’s 17-9 ATS record in its L26 as an underdog also gives me reason to expect some resistance.
The Dukes can build a lead without turning this into a scoring contest. Troy’s best chance is to shorten possessions, protect the football and avoid getting dragged into a shootout.
James Madison can win this game by three touchdowns and still leave Under bettors smiling.
The last meeting finished with 45 combined points. I don’t need another identical result, but it shows how a one-sided matchup can stay below this number.
Give me a controlled game rather than a fourth-quarter scoring contest. I’m playing Under 49.5
